Well I voted for stripes. Seems we all agree with not too much, but then again a bold and busy design done right can out think panels, scallops, borders, leaf, etc. Best of all it comes right off if you tire of it. It seems the colors would have to be dead on unique and compliment the overall. All of that excess baggage out of my head, here goes...
I'd do metallic gold, off white/ivory/ etc, nothing too tan, then a charcoal grey here n there to accent the work and bring the wheels to the party. You could do long "Greek" style with the gold as the bold line and border it with the charcoal and ivory. You could do cl***ic accents that run the car here n there, then do the beloved Fleurys on the hood n gate, leaving the 3rd color for those alone and the gold/ivory for lengthy runs. Maybe some flash around the door handles too. A good stripe job, if it's busy or simple, can really make a statement. Dollar for dollar it's the biggest kick in pants as long as the work is nice, as long as the striper knows his craft. A good guy, you can simply say "...have at it..." and end up with a winner. Just my $1.89 worth...

There's a fairly notable '60 or '61 Buick Invicta bubbletop in the Carolinas area...I say notable because I seem to see it at most LARGE shows in central NC and SC. Anyway, it's a deep blue metallic with all the brightwork polished out! Flawless car! A couple years ago, I walked up to it and got a closer look at some of the details. Then it hit me!!! BAM!

The car had white panel-type pinstripes, about 1/2" off all the trim, ALL OVER THE CAR!! From 20 feet, you couldn't see it, but the car looked special. Get to around 10 feet and the whole car POPPED!!

All that to say, if your car were mine, I would only do some long lines, in a white or ivory, around any trim and along body lines. No Von Dutch-, Ed Roth-style stripes, just long lines. IF you HAD to have something else, maybe some Tommy the Greek teardrops (spears). Great car, just needs that POP!

I just can't see how any kind of longitudinal stripe design is going to work with the chrome strip that starts on the doors and wraps around the back of the car. Scallops will clash with that as well, and are totally wrong for the sixties theme. Anything like that is just going to look busier, it's not going to add anything. Accent striping around the door handles and so on could work ok with the lines of the car, but it clashes with the "late sixties" thing you are striving for. I just don't see either approach being very successful, given your stated goals. If it was black, I would say flame it, but I like the orange. I really think it's good the way it is.
If you do stripe it, use tape, so when you look at it a month from now and realize it doesn't work, you aren't sanding off striping that you paid $$ for. Just my opinion. Maybe the fact that you are having a hard time making up your mind is telling you something? Usually, when I have a good idea, it's like "BAM!" And there's no looking back. It's the not so great ideas that I have to think about a lot.

Interesting. You could try this with tape first. If it still looks good to you in a month, get it done in paint. On orange, I would try ivory.

Don't do it!!!! Leave it just the way it is. Yes, it's very orange, but it looks GREAT like that. At least put off deciding for awhile and just drive it. Personally, and I live stripes, I just feel that some cars shouldn't have them. Ghost flames just look to me like someone who's afraid to commit. Those panels on the deliveries were meant to letter. They were designed for businesses. Unless your going to do some super cool lettering in a traditional style, my vote would be to leave it alone.

  22. Ha, I'm to old for stockings.

Seriously though, I had thought we would be looking at some cool stripes by now.
Don't mean to offend anyone, just was keen to see something already, due to Rob not wanting anything to large. I also got the impression that Rob was going to do the striping himself.
My best buddy's a striper, I'll have to show him this thread and get his opinion. he's only been at it for forty years.

  24. He just striped up these Harley fenders I sprayed for a buddy, on Monday. He may turn up tonight if I'm lucky, but he can be hard to pin down.
I hadn't thought of the cold affecting the progress.
I have the opposite problem, while doing some detail painting yesterday, the paint was drying straight off the brush. IMG_20161207_131533.jpg

Yea boy, and I think we are going to get one for the books this year! Supposed to be another 4-5" tonight and tomorrow morning!
For those that don't live in the PNW, it's not that unusual that we don't get ANY snow west of the Cascades, so we are really getting clobbered this year!

I got to thinking about this again since it's such big blank canvas to go crazy on. But with what? That's the inner positive angst about it, about a solid colored delivery that screams for some artisitic adventure being the big 60. Rather than the sharp-edged typical designs that seem so popular (and some identical regardless of artist!), if you were to commit it has to have something less common. It needs some *****in scroll work. Around the corners of the back window area, something right behind the doors, wrap some scrolls around the rear latch/emblem area, some symetry on the center of the hood but not too big or busy. I'd touch up any paint spots too. When you open the garage after it's 1st night's sleep at the end of it all it's a new car. Easy-Off oven cleaner really does remove striping enamel without damage to the finish below, but I think it's new iden***y would be a permanent smile. Scroll work was the rage in the mid to late 60s. It was like the popular practice for big rigs morphed over to hot rods and customs. Like anything you really can have too much of a good thing. Maybe a google image search (which I now have to do, thanks dammit;) ) would net you some personal ideas. **** it, just sell it to me. I'll stripe the **** out of it...

A quick edit: See, I told you I was gonna search it. Enjoy...

Ok, so something kinda like this, but turned around backwards, so it runs under the trim piece at the back? Still not feeling it, unless you start pulling trim off the car, it's just too busy. You have the chrome along the belt line, and the other piece lower on the 1/4 panel above the wheel well, running a stripe between those two pieces of trim just isn't gonna work in my opinion.
Instead of conventional pinstriping, if you REALLY have to add something, maybe go balls out early seventies, and do some candy endless lines on the sedan delivery panels??
I don't think anyone is going back and looking at the photos of the car itself, they ar just looking at photos of cool striping, and not thinking about how it's going to integrate with the cars styling.

    Thank God!
(That and the fake patina that looks just plain FAKE!)
Keep it simple, try a little- if you like it , elaborate.
Something to break up the side panels would be nice, but I'm afraid it would take too much for it to even show.
You could always put some plastic van windows in and give it that Cally, 60's vibe ( just joking)
