Hi all, I had someone media blast my interior roof, inner fenders, and all around my dash, it's now bare metal nicely etched, minimal pitting. He used crushed gl***. I am going to use a spray can of Epoxy Primer (Eastwood or similar) the kind with the little valve on the bottom of the can to mix it. The metal looks pretty clean but looks are deceiving, with this type of media do further precautions need to be made to clean the metal before spraying? Degreasing, or metal prep products? It's in a dry cool garage, will be sitting in bare metal for about 3 days before I can spray it. Thanks in advance!
i would approach those areas, each a little different. for the dash areas, that show, i would sand it with 80 grit with a da sander, prepsall, tack rag and prime. i would do the same with the inner fenders. under the roof i would probably just blow it out and prime it.
Basically you will take an hour in prepping the surface and 5 minutes in painting . Take your time Prep is so important don't rush and you'll be happier with the results .Epoxy Primer is a versatile primer and its compatible with most any other coating. It’s acceptable for use over bare metal or existing coatings. .first abrading the entire area you’re priming with 80-120 grit sandpaper. Surfaces coated with epoxy primer can also have plastic body filler applied over it if properly prepared.
Do the instructions on the can recommend any certain type of prep cleaner? Many epoxy manufacturers have specific requirements.
Im picking the Epoxy up tomorrow after work, speciality paint shops have the same work hours as me... bogus. Thanks guys, sounds like a good plan. I'll check the label but know it will vary on types of blast media used and the type of panel. Like the dash for instance, I will be doing a tiny bit of finish work which will include a bit of filler, also it'll be sitting for a good while before paint which is why I opted for Epoxy. I get nervous leaving it bare metal for a few days but atleast it's indoors and not all humid!
Some companies (SPI) are specific about body filler below the epoxy as opposed to over it. Kind of a debate but it's worth looking into.
Thanks for the help all. So the Epoxy in a can I bought is Spray Max 2k primer. I used this stuff once last year outside, with a basic respirator and covered my body pretty well. The back says to use an air supplied respirator. I've got a bit of asthma and not sure what to do. I guess either buy the expensive air supplied respirator for one small job, or hire someone to swing by my place and spray it for me... I don't want to mess with the lungs on this stuff.
