so im trying to setup the daytona pinon ive got with a solid spacer/shim kit. with the "standard" spacer and shims its no where close to being tall enough to stop the bearing races.

the spacer kit im using looks like this and im not sure how the larger spacer is supposed to be used. its inner diameter fits the pinion shaft, and the outer raised lip fits around the "standard spacer" and shim outer diameter.

this order: standard spacer, a shim, large spacer with the large side towards the shim. See how that works.

Keep stacking in there until you reach proper preload.

Just because one showcar did it does not make it traditional ;)

I can provide about 50 examples, but I have been asked not to push this.

so the "standard spacer" against the inner bearing? and then the larger recessed groove side capturing the shims in between the standard spacer wile the tapered edge is up against the inner race of the outer bearing?

that single "standard spacer" and all the shims isnt enough to set a proper preload between the inner and outer bearings

Even when you stack it all up, it is still not enough?

    That's weird.

yeah the aluminum daytona support has alot of material between the two outer bearing races (not a bad thing), im just not sure how that tapered centric spacer works in the stack

This is a comparison between the standard and Daytona setups. The pinion shown if for the Daytona, and has a full solid spacer on it. Fine shims would be used against that to get it spot-on:

The "big" side of that shim on the left in your picture must be placed so that the "snout" is toward one of the bearings. If you flipped it over, it might hit the cage.

There are 2 solid spacer kits, one for the standard pinion and one for the Daytona, the spacer in the Daytona kit is thicker, do you have the right one ?

I've had problems with the Richmond shim kits lately, Richmond sold to Motive and that might be a problem. If you can't find the right shim stuff try going to Strange Engineering, they might be the ones that made the daytona pinion support to begin with.

I use the speedway solid spacer kits, the Daytona kit is 0.48 thick and the normal kit is 0.43

It's much simpler to use a crush sleeve. That's what I use in my 9-second Chevy II.

I use a crush sleeve to do setup..
Take it apart and measure the crushed sleeve..and then stack the solid spacer and shims to size..
