These are the bomb, if I do say so myself. I had to clearance the square spindles I have on the corners and lower kingpin boss, and pull the steering arm in a skosh, but doesn't this look better than stock? [emoji6]

Want to use those on our 34 project I'm now collecting parts for.
You get those directly from Wilson Welding?

That piece of brake drum missing in the second picture will cause it to be out of balance. You may get a vibration at speed.

I have a set just like yours sitting on the shelf waiting for me to get back to my RPU project. I really like the look but I was wondering; has anyone weighed them and compared that whole ***embly weight to the weight of the early Ford set up or the Lincoln backing plate version?? I wonder if there is any significant difference in the unsprung weight?
I don't have any stock stuff to compare it with.

Whoa! Are those the same Wilson backing plates mention in your build thread that you were not going to put on the car until the ch***is was painted to avoid getting them dirty??? They look great. I wouldn't have been able to wait either.

I'm going to have broken one repaired. I don't think they're any heavier than the stock backing plates. I decided I had to trial fit them to make sure the steering arm cleared, which it didn't. So, my impatience worked out for the best! [emoji12]

  14. Brian,
I put a set on the Winters QC with 9" big bearing ends in my late, sold, '32 roadster. I had Bob drill them for those housing ends. They fit great but I had to bring the axles out of the housing just a bit, so I put about a 1/2"spacer between the bearing and axle flange so that the axle flange would be offset outside a bit more. If you order rears look at brake offset carefully.

Ended up couldn't get a 5-1/2" bolt circle on those axles. Had Moser make a pair with the offset and they said, can't be done. I said put a spacer in, they said why couldn't we think of that. Duh.

Charlie, I'm prolly going to get a pair of the thin fake Buick covers and slide 'em over the '55 Chevy backing plates. The rears are hard to see and those will look fine at a glance.

  16. If you have a set of good drums but the linings are bad, worn out, or getting white fuze between the steel and aluminum here a place to get the steel lining replaced

Now you have a subproject. Spending the winter polishing all that aluminum.

I'm going to paint them and polish the fins. And, falcongeorge, if I had them chromed, it'd just make all the old chrome on the car look bad, so, no chrome for me! Plus, I can't afford it! This car will be shiny, but OLD shiny...;-)

I have some 45 fins and a VERY cherry pair of '39/'40 backing plates here for a future project, gotta buff the ever-lovin **** out of them and send them off to the platers. Then when they come back gotta paint the recessed area around the spindles. Mmmmmm, shiiiiiny!:)

I have two sets of '40 backing plates, the gnarly looking pair complete, and another pair stripped and very nice, with holes neatly drilled for venting, but one is warped. It could be flattened in a shop press, but I like the finned Wilson ones, and opted for them, as opposed to rebuilding the '40's.

George, no need to paint the recessed area. Remove the adjusters and you can well polish that area before installing replacement polished stainless adjusters & springs. Regards, Ron adj.JPG

I WANT it painted, I love that look. Will polish that area prior to plating/paint, want to paint the centre of the I beam as well.

  27. I have 2 that I am building: 28 A 2 dr sdn with Wilson backing plates and 45 fin Buick drums front and rear using the Buick hubs (got adapters adapters from sanfordsotherson here on H.A.M.B.) on 32 rail with a hemi. And a 28 RPU ( a cheaper build) with stock drilled backing plates with 90 fined Buick drums front and rear with Buick hubs and a Y Block. I do not know which I like best.

I also have a set of backing plates with fines that use wildwood calipers and disc brakes
