Funny that most of you guys say nasty things about those little Hemis, but Tex Hill devoted a whole chapter to them...

Looks great, runs good, is way unusual, what's not to like?

Furthermore, I can't log on here without someone inquiring about running an '80s/'90s S10 five speed in their rod--that's no more "traditional" than a Toyota hemi.

  9. Actually it is a hemi. it has hemispherical combustion chambers. it just isn't a traditional hemi.

I don't know how they run but as all things nipponese it is a pretty good copy of the real deal. I'd like to own one to play with, it would be perfect in a Resto Rod. :D

Apparently they run pretty good. I remembered a thread like this one a while back, Carps provides some good info.

    Hey! Here an idea!

Why don't some of you wannabe forum moderators leave that job to the ACTUAL MODERATORS and let the adults talk? Mmmkay?

And if you wanna argue foreign vs. domestic, what is more American? A Toyota made in West Virginia or a Chevy made in Mexico City? Some of you guys need to join the rest of us in the 21st century. In case you haven't noticed, the big 3 is slowly pulling out of the states so they can exploit the 3rd world workforce and no longer be subjected to those "pesky labor laws" (you know, the ones that keep us from being victimized by big business?). Translation: They're selling us out & no longer deserve our unquestioned loyalty. Think about it.

That being said, it's kind of a cool little motor. I've always been kinda fascinated by them. Is that really true about them being a copy of the red ram? From what I understand Datsun (now Nissan) based the original straight 6 used in the 240/260/280 Z series on an actual mirror image of a late 60's mercedes design. Anyone know if that is true?

Interesting discussion. Try not to let it hurt your feelings.

    I agree...

It is cool. A Daimler Hemi V8 is cool too. And a Quad Cam Alfa Montreal V8 ( also a Hemi ) too.

As long as they are only rarely used, they are a interesting variation on the theme, IMO.

That T with the Toyota Hemi has been posted on the HAMB before, and I dont remember anybody being offended by it.
( That big shiny aftermarket Alternator looks more out of place to me than the Engine does...)

I doubt if its a true copy of the Red Ram.
The Red Ram was all cast iron, this one is all Aluminum.
I bet port shapes and cam profiles are very different too...

I posted the pic of mr. Honda's Racer to try and show not all Hot Rods were built in the States.
( Trad ones even... That one ran in '24. )

But to me, the age of the parts used IS important....

It is NOT a copy of the Red Ram. Not even close, it's a completely Toyota design(It even has bolt on CAM bearing caps, so you could lift the cam out the top instead of out the front). That quote is from the Tex Smith Hemi book in the rumors section of the Toyota blurb.

  16. Id run one if I had it!
You think that is bad I am hoarding stuff for a new roadster pickup.....I'm goin to use Carbureted Datsun 4 cyl and 5 speed to power it!:D

I once used a L20B Datsun SOHC four with four speed in a full fendered '27 T roadster. It ran good with a Webber carb, was very dependable, didn't overheat, and the radiator ('78 pickup) fit the '27 shell like it was made for it. Not a real hot rod, but a very nice cruiser.

Was trying to figure out why this thread still had life. Read thru all the posts, and noticed that the strongest 'trad' opinions seem to emanate from the 'new guys', and the most moderation and thought came from folks who have spent some time here.

just an opinion - but it'd prolly be beneficial to *understand* the look/feel of the place B4 rendering opinions. Otherwise...y'all look kinda silly.

Not that I mind silly - but some folks have issues with silly.

Tellyouwhut - if I could have an Ardun lookalike for less than $20K (repop ardun heads are 15 large, mind you) I'd be on it like stink on shit.

Besides - the only REAL traditional hot rod motor is a Frontenac Ford. Everything else is just an ugly cheap-assed imitation hot rod.

    so there.

  26. A big amen to Repoman. "domestic" auto manufacturers have been selling our asses down the river, while the Japs are creating new, good paying jobs here in the U.S.A.
As for Toyota copying Dodge, that's like Bill Gates asking a caveman for help with his laptop.

Yea, seems a lot like you. Sounds like such a hot setup, I'd trade that '50 Olds mill with Cad trans for one if someone's willing to part...

  28. Hmmm, do I jump in or not?

    Fuggit!

The Toyota hemi is a bonafide Hemi, right down to it's cute little Hemispherical combustion chambers. And the good news is they also built a neat little four banger using a similar cylinder head design.

The V8 was in production from the early sixties until recently when it was replaced in the Toyota Century by a quad cam 12 cylinder with four valves per piston and pentroof combustion chambers like the 'New Hemi'.

I don't know anybody has one of these who doesn't absolutely love it. They are light, compact enough to fit under a '27 T Ford hood, perform like a V8, sound like a V8 and bugger me they even look like a V8, and best of all they look like the Hemi V8 that they are.

I could recite chapter and verse on this engine (read the tex Smith book and you may understand) but it won't help the people who are so blinkered thay can't see past the old dinosaur they so love.

Now, thhere is another Toyota V8 that does take something from a US design. fellow named Keith Black designed an engine block for racing without all the flaws of the mass produced version of the dsame basic design. Wjhat Mr Black did was design about the most rigit cylinder block possible, so his engines couold survive the riogours of top level notro fuel drag racing. The boys at Toyota couldn't come up with a better design when they wanted top produce the ultimate production V8, so.......... yup, they copied what the master had already done. But they did at least relocate the camshaft and put their own cylinder heads on it. ;)

Sorry guys, I love my trad cars just as much as you, but I also live in the real world where it's nice sometimes to just look around and smell the dasies.

Just coz you don't like sumpin doesn't mean you gotta dreride it.

I won't say it isn't cool and I won't say it isn't powerful and techy and all of that other stuff, but I will say I don't like to see them between the fenders of a traditional hot rod. And that is, after all, why this place is here. If we didn't care about hot rod tradition we'd all be at the RRT talking about IFS and the neatest new crate engines.

We can dreride anything we want to..... :)

Since this will probably never be resolved I'll just derail it...

    CARPS,

I see Gerry Essex almost every day. I work with him. He's currently building a Hudson Terraplane ('36 or '37 - can't remember).

Actually he's family - he's my dad's half brother. We were talking at break one day and he bring's up a guy named Carp from Down Under and I was like - NO WAY!!! I think I know that guy!!!

    Small world.

Now go on and defend yourself.... :)
