So I just got accepted to the University of Minnesota Law School in Minneapolis (I's gonna get me edumacated...), but I haven't been there since I was about 3 years old. Naturally, I don't remember **** about it.

Any Minneapolis HAMBers out there that can give me the low down on the city? What are some good neighborhoods? What's it like around the University? What's the car scene like? What are rents like? I live in California now, and I know the winters are a touch nippy, so I don't really need to here about that. Can't be much worse than the 4 years I spent in Vermont, right....

Anything you guys and gals can tell me would be much appreciated.

Hey guy, glad to hear you're coming to my part of the country. I'll try yo be brief and to the point here...

Rent - Average would be 800 to 1000. Uptown (west side of mpls off of Lake ST.) is a cool area with lots of neat restaraunts and clubs. Space is tight though. I personally am in Bloomington, just minutes from downtown and the "U".

Car Scene - I live vicariously through my pops since my truck isn't running yet. About all we do for events is the Back to the 50's in late June. Oh, and this year I will be having Hot Rod Bar-B-Q Numero Cuatro at my pad. Free food, drinks... lot's of fun. University Avenue always seems to draw a huge croud of cruisers on the weekends. I'm sure others know more about car scene than I do.

Well, I guess I wasn't as brief as I intended to be. Oh well.

So what kind of car/cars are you bringing up to MN with you? I might have some space if you need to do some wrenchin!

    Laters,

Well, don't know if I'm coming quite yet. I still have a few schools I need to hear from, but I'd say at this point, it's a good possibility. As for cars, well... nothin of note right now. Just driving a late model vette (which come to think of it, almost constantly needs wrenching, but I digress), but I'm always on the lookout for a solid, cl***ic daily driver I can trade the vette in on.

BTW, do they salt the roads up there in the winter? or just sand?

It's funny that you ask about salting the roads becuase I realized something not too long ago. The short answer is yes, the salt... and sand! I have to wait well into May before they sweep it all up before I can get the Vespa out.

Anyways, this is what I was thinking about...

It always looks so cool when a rod has that nice coating of Bonneville salt on it, being a little heavier and chunkier at the rear of the fenders. And then I realized that all these winters of driving around in Minnesnowta that my car always has a coating of salt on it. But Damn! It's this hoirrible hodge podge smattering of salt here and grime there. It looks aweful and eats away at my car too! Oh well, I guess I'll just have to build something to take to Bonneville some day.

if ya come up here i would check into uptown if you like to be around a lot of culture and fairy stuff and i would check into st paul, grand ave and mac groveland. pretty much south of university between missippi river blvd and lexington clear southward to ft snelling mostly. i grew up in bloomington til i graduated a few years back, it isnt what it used to be, back then we got more **** ripped off out there and cars broke into, but knock on wood, st paul has been a ok experience. i had a apt up by st thomas once, was a average rent of $635, falcon heights and rosedale isnt bad either, just watch yur speed in the burbs. u of m rent is over 700 on average i think.

you can drive it in the winter, but people up here like to slide around a lot, its not the salt wreckin it as much as the minivan that t-bones you.

also want any old tin, bring it with you and get it b4 you leave, whatever is not rust n dust is not as readily available always as your neck of the woods .

    Thanks guys.

If I do end up in Minneapolis, I'd have some qualms about having a cl***ic for my one and only car. Living in VT for four years showed me how quickly the underside of a car starts to rust with salted roads. Would I be willing to let that happen to a beloved cl***ic? I don't know. On the other hand, if I live close to school and can walk or ride the bus, and keep the car in the garage, then it might be justifiable. How is the public transit up there?

As for rent, I pay 850 for a one bedroom here in Cal, and everyone looks at me like I got the steal of the century, so 650-700 sounds pretty damn good to me.

Anything else I should know about Minn/St. Paul?

I haven't lived in the Twin Cities in a couple years, but when I did, University Ave between 280 and Snelling was always hopping on weekends. Lots of rice, but a lot of cool cars, too. Oh, and Porky's shakes are the best.

{Edit} Weekends in May, June, July, and August. The rest of the year its too damn cold.
