Good to see your still kicking John.

Merry Christmas and the best NEW YEAR to all of you

This morning I remembered an engine noise.......

One day driving the engine developed a loud t******* noise. This got worse and was loudest at idle. Soon it was followed by an intense vibration...... the thump and shakes subsided with more revs. "Oh Well! I've a piston collapsed and t*******. The noise was forward and high up in the engine. The thump you could feel in the clutch peddle! I got home opened the hood and started looking around for the source. When I couldn't see anything I shut the engine off and looked again. I was running a thick/wide fan belt. As luck was on my side it stopped in a place where I could see I had lost about a 4 inch piece on there underside of the belt. Cut the belt and started the engine..... NO NOSE anymore. No later pump turning either so shut it down quickly and fitted a new belt. I am still driving on that belt but now I carry a spare under the seat........

There is no liquid solution to proper diagnosis and repair.

And every now and then the earth moves for ya:eek: ... just a little summer shake up , eh Rusty? I forgot to tell you I was on my way home from a southern trip , staying at Bob's place in Kaikoura on November 14, didn't get out for a month. I should have just visited with you and stayed in Christchuch for a few days.

You would have been very welcome and could have helped get my motor tuned I have a feeling my plug leads are braking down

It's been an educational experience tinkering on the A since I got it. I had (past tense) it running pretty good after rebuilding the carbs, putting a new head gasket on, and electronic ignition. Something happened along the way and started getting gas in the oil. After a bit more tinkering, I found the back carb has a vacuum leak, and parts are on the way for a re-rebuild. I am also giving in on the plugs and going with modern 14mm plugs. I also need to plumb in the fuel pressure gauge and run a compression check. Hopefully the gas in the oil problem hasn't caused problems necessitating a rebuild. I still want to drive it a bit before going with the 8BA. After I do that it'll live on in a friend's car who's planning on using my engine in his build. I want to p*** it along to him running it's best though.

Try one of these ..... It will tell you the KVA in wires and a bunch of other things too :)

I'm sure you can get them local to you. I've used one for years

I'm using the "E3" spark plugs & they burn much cleaner than regular plugs in my car

Unfortunately my plugs are the very small diameter ones I dont think ideal for the job but someone wiser than me may be able to advise

Hi Russ, Close inspection of the plugs and the motor will tell you what it wants. Trouble with that is carb settings and timing tend to cloud the issue.
Can find lots of plugs and old style HT lead and fittings if you need it.

Think I stumbled onto my issues. Doing some tinkering, i ran plumbed in a fuel pressure gauge. 1.5 psi. Still waiting on 1 pair of plugs, but I was able to run a compression check with the adapters, 120 psi on all 4 cylinders. Hmm.. Confused, really confused. Took a step back and thought for a few more minutes. Started looking more closely at my linkages and return spring set-up while swapping the carbs positions. once it was all back together and all linkages set to a better neutral, BANG it started running good again. Seems as though I didn't fully lock something into position after the first carb rebuild. I'll be refining the linkages in the next couple days. Happy to have it running good again.
