Looks like the 2017 schedule is up. I know myself and some others are planning to make it to at least one event this year. Anyone else planning to go? Spring Event May 5th-7th Maine Event July 12th-16th Harvest Event Sept 1st -3rd
Been wanting to go to Loring for a long time, nobody wants to travel that far. . . Which event you guys planning to attend?
I'm not sure probably the July meet anyways. I know a guy that's trying to improve his record on a turbo charged BSA and I'd like to see it run.
Did not even know about this. How long have they been doing this? Thanks for posting. Sent from my SM-T377V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
From what I see on Facebook, and elsewhere, Looks to be predominately motorcycle event. Correct? Sent from my SM-T377V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
May event is lightly attended ... still cold in Maine. Bikes to cars is about 60/40. July is 5 day event and usually 50/50. There are a number of cars testing for Bonneville. Labor Day Harvest event is 50/50 bikes/cars. Our team races both.
Hope to bring the lakester out for its first run in May after many years of building. Ran it on an abandoned stretch of highway in Nov. and found out it shift and stop.
Great, it's awesome to see so much interest in this event! There's no experience like going to Bonneville but with the ever deteriorating condition of the salt and the significant time and money commitment to go to Utah, I feel like Loring is a much safer bet. Does anyone know if there is a good camping option?
We are going to May Event and hopefully all three events with the Flying Seven GMC 302 57 Chevy. This is a great place to race, and test. One year we bumped up our record about 18 times in little improvements. It's almost hot lapping, make a small change and try again. Very nice, friendly track personnel. By Sunday, most cars are done, either out of ideas or broken. Mostly the bike guys running. If your stuff lasts til Sunday you almost have the place to yourself. Can't wait to go there again!!!
Now that's what I'm talking about. Look forward to getting there this year. Sent from my SM-T377V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Gas pumper, is there a build thread on the Flying Seven? Sent from my SM-T377V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
No build thread. But the History is very interesting. It's an ex-circle track racer that ran both dirt and asphalt in Maine. For many years with the number 7 and called the Flying Seven!. It was retired to a field and a few years ago given to it's current owner to do something with it. Marcia Barker wanted to race it at Loring in the Circle Track cl*** and felt the best way to do that on a budget was to run in the vintage inline cl*** XO. The first year attempts were with a pretty stock 235 Chevy and she tells me the first p*** was about 85 mph, gradually working up to about 101 mph. Next was the same stockish leaking fog making 235 with a cam and 2 Rochesters and we got it up to 116 and felt we needed more engine to go faster. So we got involved in the GMC 302 world and built a stock engine to see what that would do as a baseline. We made 122 with the basically stock 302 with electronic ignition and a 4 barrel carb and headers. Lots of tuning to get that speed out of it. Now we bought some GMC parts that included a really great cam and felt we were ready to spend some money and build a race engine!! This engine has 12:1 Arias pistons, great cam, steel flywheel, ****tershield, Camaro T-5, 4 barrel Holley, 3-2-1 headers, HEI ignition, and electric fuel pump. We have been to 133 in the mile I think and 135 in the mile and a half. We had issues with blowing out freeze plugs, throwing the water pump belt and other growing pains. And wound up not achieving our goal of 140's in the mile and a half. We will be there in May with a fresh valve job and an electric water pump and maybe a gear change to see what we can do. You gotta hear Marcia leave the line and scream this engine to shift at 6500 rpm! It's a lot of fun! Happy Motoring!!
Not sure if it is still there, but there was a huge salvage yard in the area. I went with a couple of friends and made a weekend out of it - there was a lot of great stuff there, but that was over twenty years ago.
I met Marcia and her 57 at New England Dragways hot rod reunion 2015. She is full of knowledge and excitement about her car. Great story. I look forward to see her in action
Oh ****! I didn't know that. Do you have anymore info? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Thanks Pete. I remember the car from Bonneville, but I missed the news that it had burnt. Wow, that ****s. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Gas pumper, thanks for the info on the Flying Seven. Great story. Hope to see it run. I see you're from Boonton, NJ. I go to several Carlisle events every year. Always try to stop at Poor Henry's on my way back to the Catskill Mtns. In NY. Great spot. Sent from my SM-T377V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Wow, Haven't been to Poor Henry's for years!!! Used to have lunch there regularly. Look up Grumpy's Roadhouse in Allentown PA, right off rt 22 if you like great BBQ on the way back from Carlise and Hershey.
