Any sure-fire way to loosen a stuck distributor in a Y-block Merc ? ( short of pulling the intake and using a pipe wrench, that is. )

I would try to rig up some sort of slide-hammer. Some all-thread, a piece of steel or cast with an appropriate size hole, a few washers and a stop nut. Weld it to a old vise-grip or some sort of clamp. I have one I set up with threads cut to replace the adjustment screw on my vise-grips. I think its 7/16-14 thread, so I can switch it back to a regular vise-grips, no welding required.

I hate to say this, but I used the pipe wrench. Not to pull but to turn to loosen the welding of the aluminum and the steel. Is it scarred? Yes, but I can clean it up. But honest,, you can get either a nice rebuilt one or a brand new one from Auto Zone and they are not expensive.

If the distributor is pre 57 you won't lose much anyway.

  7. Advance auto also carries rebuilts, but may have to ask for a '62 truck model.

Cardone 30-2808 is the standard part # they can cross. It will likely have chinesium points and condenser, the curve will be about right for hauling a load of gravel, and the vac advance numbers may not be what you want either.

  9. Had to drop the pan and hammer it out from the bottom.

I replaced my Loadmatic with a Rock Auto Cardone and within a year of 2 bad condensers went to Pertronics.
I've had my pan off and don't remember any distributor parts to hit. I wasn't looking but the oil pump is on the outside.
