I live in Florida and found a 53 Bel Air here that was last ***led in Ohio. The owners have owned it for many years, buying it from the original owner his dad. They cannot find the ***le or registration. Ohio DMV said they onlykeep records for 7 years then file them. They tell me I have to know the month and year they bought it to retrieve the ***le. The owners have no clue. Does anyone know any other way to get a ***le from them? The companies that say they can get you a ***le are they legit? Thanks for any help.

  2. Not certain the info you have received is accurate.
I lived in one Ohio county for 33 years, then moved to N.C.
Same scenario, misplaced my Ohio ***le and my registration.
I went to my local DMV office in Lake County, provided them with my vehicle serial number.
Somehow, they were able to provide me with my replacement Ohio ***le.
Not knowing, at the time, that my registration was misplaced, the registration replacement was applied for online, believe I paid $5.00 and my new registration was sent out.
I did, however, know my OHIO license plate number.
NOTE: If you buy without a ***le, you COULD be in for a big azz ache, not FACTUALLY knowing why the ***le doesn't exist.
Many cars for sale out there, with actual ***les in hand.

A friend ran into this a while back on a '34 Chevy. Been in a barn (really!) for decades, owners could not find ***le. He had to file papers with the Ohio BMV, then go before a judge for a hearing, then issued a ***le once everything was declared 'legit'. A little time consuming, but fairly painless. This was all in state (Ohio seller/buyer). The process may differ with you being in Fla., dunno.

I would think it would be up to the seller to jump through all the hoops necessary to get a replacement ***le, or file for a lost ***le to sell the car. After all at this point you have no skin in the game as a purchaser. After you buy it without a ***le it's your *** in a sling.

They are old and if I don't do it, it won't happen. I don't mind doing some leg work but won't buy it till I get a ***le.

  6. Without a ***le you have to start with form HSMV 82050. This is a Florida bill of sale form that both parties need to sign. Also you will need a hand written bill of sale (it helps). You will also need to fill out HSMV 82042 and have the odometer and VIN verified. The form seems to read that you need it done by DMV or a state trooper, HOWEVER, it also indicates you can get a licensed used or new car dealer to do it as well. I took my VIN plate and speedometer to a friend that runs a used car dealer and had her sign the paper. They will need to stamp it with their letterhead.
This will avoid you having to go to Ohio.
BTW, it took FOUR DMV office visits to find out about these forms........

I was in a similar spot several years ago. I bought a ***le at the swapmeet that had the vin tag with it. You can guess the rest... Hard part is finding a ***le with the vin tag.

  9. If this '53 is in Florida, and the owners have had it for many years, why is the Ohio ***le important ?
Being that the car has been in Florida, doesn't it have a Florida ***le and plates ?

Just file for a lost ***le. All you need is the VIN.

The car has been in Florida for many years but they never ***led it. For Ohio you have to know the month and year of purchase for the lost ***le process. I am going to check into Ricks garage's suggestion.

If you need to move on the deal so someone else doesn't get to it, you really need a Notarized Bill of Sale. It would also be wise to type something up (as if they ar the ones who wrote it) indicating the situation and details down to the VIN number. If you end up going the route through the courts this will make all the difference. I am speaking from experience. I learned A LOT going through this and do***ented every step in a word do***ent if you have any interest.
