Is the OHV engine in the second b&w pic a sbc? Pretty cool to have something Tommy Hinner****zwas involved with, probably the best sprint car pilot ever.

It is a sbc, and I loved watching Tommy when I was young.

Contact the antique auto club in Hershey. They can tell you when the car was entered and who entered it. To get the aaca tag it had to be complete and running at that time.

To get that AACA Certified tag the car has to be real, and raced at some time. Photos that prove that had to be sent along with the application along with the known history of the car. Great find! Bob

    That is Reading.

I have a copy of a story on the car owner from an old Reading Fairgrounds book I have. When I get a chance to scan it I'll post it here for you.

Take a look at my avatar, I grew up in Hyde Park, about five blocks from the Reading Fairgrounds. I still have my autograph book and Russ Delp is on the first page. I still remember that car, I believe Russ Delp's wife would come down to the track just before the feature start, carrying Russ's daughter. Russ would always get a good luck kiss from his family before each big race. In those days the front straight fence was about 3 feet tall.
We went every week to watch the best damn racing. Not a big money fight yet. A decent flat head and the right gears made you compe***ive. It stayed with me all these years- that's why I'm currently building a 32 5w coupe. Bobby Abel was my hero back then, I also got to meet Russ Smith in 2000. Great stories. I plan on making my project in a drag theme for 2 years, then redo and try to make the Bonneville 150 MPH club, but after that I want to convert it to a dirt style car modeled after the old Reading Cars from the 50's, to drive on the street. This is a great place to remember the past! Thanks

I had the pleasure of meeting Vicki DeSantis at Terry Reichart's house on Bernhart Ave, in Hyde Park. That was in 1963 or 1964 I think. I had an immediate huge crush on her.
My dad was friends with Tilley Forrer, J2, Whitey Kershner drove it back then. My dad told me that Tilley started his business in our old garage in Hyde Park.
Fast forward to 73 and I helped Curt Weller build his first coupe, 37 Chevy coupe body, 63 Ford frame rails, and trailer bar front suspension, with a fresh L-88 Chevy from Fisher Chevrolet.
Miss the old days, damn change!

  19. Thanks for posting that Al! What is the name of the book from which that came???

Good stuff man! Thanks for posting!

This book has much info on the "Modified" racing at Reading, with a lot of photos (some are even mine), stats, and history. One problem is it only covers the "Modifieds" (1963-1979), and there is Nothing at all about the "Flathead Era".

I don't know how many copies were printed, but I've seen them for sale at car show flea markets.

I found this old photo. It's not your car, but it's the '60 or '61 version of the #14, and it is my favorite of all the DeSantis cars......... because it's a Deuce !! :D

This photo is from 1959... different engine builder, Shuey of Shuman's Garage... I also think it may be the same car you have because the top was obviously altered and made into a 3 window. It could be 1958. I seem to remember that we went to 7 digit phone numbers in '59.:)

    cactus1,

If you haven't already done so, you should do some digging to see if Russ Delp is still around. If he is I bet he would love to see his old ride. You could also try to find his son Rusty or daughter Cindy as well. They might appreciate it too. It would be neat to get their perspective on their dad's racing exploits.

  29. I have done a little digging and it looks like Russ Delp Sr. p***ed away in last July :(. I have not tried to make contact with any family members just yet. You are right, it would be great to hear their recollections on his racing days! Thanks for looking in!
