been working off and on with this project. lots of distractions getting in the way, moving, other projects, and life getting in the way but im going to get it done! injected sbc going in, have had the rail all together for the most part, and have had this body for a few years, and keep wanting to put it on ch***is, just wandering what othe people would do to cuy wheel wells, im going to put tubs inside body, between ch***is, and body.. going to have to cut into door itself to complete tire opening. doors will still be operable to get to engine. will post up more pics when i get a chance. thanks PICT0288.JPG PICT0282.JPG PICT0280.JPG PICT0292.JPG PICT0293.JPG

Figure out how to attach a yardstick to the rear axle hub center, that will allow it to rotate. Tape a marker to the yardstick at the point where you want the cut to be. This will cut you a nice, even line to follow.

put a nail in stick, hold it in center of axle, put a screw through other end as far as you want,

swing arc and let screw make mark,, get your aviation snips out and go to work, cut about 1 1/2 inch FROM MARK so you can bend a "lip"
JIG SAW SHAKES TO MUCH, AND WALKS from line. ( imo)

    Car looks AWESOME!
I use a 4 1/2" angle grinder with a thin kerf cut off disc- if you go SLOWLY and use BOTH HANDS, you can cut arcs pretty easily ( especially something as big as a wheel well.)

This was 1/4" flat stock cut for boxing plates - SLOW is the trick. Good Luck!

thanks guys for the replys. i had some ideas on how to do it, just wondered if somebody had something better than im thinkin. the ch***is is my copy of a ch***is research car, i have to cut in to the bottom corner of the door also. then wheel tubs for the slicks. heres a pic of the finished project, i hope!! have had a lot of starts and stops on this thing.

  8. I tend to do things just a bit different than most. My advice is to think past just cutting the body panel to Exactly how it will be finished off. On sheet metal I never do a final finish cut with any power tools. A good set of aircraft snips are Cheep. Don't buy Cheep snips. The last thing I'd want is a raw body edge just above the tire, as far as that goes anywhere on the Car. For me, I'd cut the tire dia. knowing I'm going to do a finish trim by hand and then weld in something for a finish to the edge. It's a lot easier than you might think. Here's a few photos of a like project I did a while back. That is 1/2" X 1" rectangle tube tig welded on the finished edge. The edge is stiffer than a *****'s dream. There is also No filler at all used on it.

    Hello,
Nice project, great drawing, and the whole thing looks good in real time. Though, I may have to ask a question. Before you go to all of the trouble to cut out the wheel well opening and finish the tubs, how are you going to get in the ch***is? If it were a flip up front to back() then you could walk around and get in the seat. Or a sliding roof panel for a drop in, but...
    Am I missing something here?

when were done with bodu mounts and many other things there will be a hole in roof, one step at a time. lots to do yet, have already shortened body 6 inches, doors shortened next, just asking about fenderwells as i go, when building everything from scratch, you have to look at 2 or 3 steps ahead.,

I wonder not only about the ease of entry, which you can take your time doing but rather about the need to exit which you may need to do much quicker.

If you don' t know Eastwood makes a tool for rolling the edges on the fender. It attaches to the hub and looks like it works real good. Gary
