Maybe I missed it, but how much did you end up offsetting the engine/xmsn ?

For anyone else contemplating a swap of this nature ..... an LA fits quite nicely...

Yeah the LA or even the V8 sbc has better exh. manifold choices. I used this engine combo because that's what my customer brought me. Did you have to do any tunnel work setting the engine back that far?

I offset it the 1" that the kit from Butch gives you. Plus a little because I set the mounts farther back than he designs for, so I had to cut the p***.side frame mount about another half inch.

    OK, thanks for the info.
Finally got the steering figured out on mine, and it looks like I'll probably have to offset the engine/xmsn about the same or perhaps a little less.

I always try to install the motors with the carb flange flat, in all directions. I want the carb as level as possible. I was told years ago that the heads/valve covers needed to be 3 degrees down at the back of the motor, which made the carb plate flat, the 3 degrees was built into the angle of the carb flange. I was told the purpose of the 3 degrees was to aid in the oil return to the pan. The guy that told me this was an "old guy" that had built a lot of hot rods/race cars back in the day. It seemed to work for him, so I never questioned it. Now, I'm that old guy relaying what I was told, and what worked for me.

That said, I don't believe you will have an issue with what you have. Gene

That's kind of what I thought Gene...Thanks for your reply. Where I am now I have the trans mount blocked up 3/4" I guess I'll have to try to drop the front of the engine some. I don't have a lot of clearance to the front cross member. If I put the trans on the cross member where it mounts, the front of the engine will have to be pretty low. I am dealing with a stock tunnel which I thought I could get away with. Thanks for the help! JR.

Ok, here is what I have and it seems like all I can get...The carb base is level side to side(Obviously) But I still have a about .5 degree tilt rearward. On the V.C. I get 5.5 degree tilt down (To the rear obviously)That leaves the trans. pan flange at basically zero, and with an angle gauge on the trans output shaft I get 5.0 degrees down. Right now my pinion angle is at 4.5 up, but that may change as I have a new set of springs going in and I'm not too worried if I have to change this. I don't have any more room to drop the front of the engine for linkage/Oil pan clearance. To maintain these angles I need to block or raise my trans cross member by about 2.5 inches from where Butch's kit is supposed to be mounted. I know this is Hot Rodding, but do you all think these numbers are correct enough??? Might be too late to ask as I'm final welding everything this AM...lol

You're close enough , a degree or 2 won't hurt anything as long as the driveshaft is balanced...the engine offset is ok , again the factory has been doing it for decades...

I thought you were close enough before you made the last round of changes, so your for sure OK now.
If I were building your project, I'd probably make sure the last round of changes will still allow you the clearances you feel comfortable with. If things are tighter then you really like, back off and add in a bit more clearance. This stuff is hot rodding, like any project, there are the designed numbers that are ideal (according to someone somewhere), and then there are the numbers needed to make things work. Sometimes compromises need to be made between "ideal" and "what works". I prefer to go with "what works" every time, unless it is radically different then what the ideal was. Gene

Thanks for the support! Everything's welded up, so I'm going to paint it and reinstall for the last time hopefully tomorrow if the paint gets here...Then I can order a driveshaft and start the hard stuff...lol I'll post pics when it's in!

Ok...The paint was late of course. It's finally in, and this time I think to stay. I kept busy wiring up the gauge cluster. So at least now the easy stuff is done...lol IMG_6142.JPG IMG_6142.JPG

Ok, Motor, ****** in and ready so time to start wiring up.... Also changed rear springs and waiting for new fronts to get the correct ride height so I can get a driveshaft.

  16. The 3* down is most important, as you measure driveshaft inclination.
3* down on the ****** and 3* up on the pinion, is the ideal setup, for a properly pitched driveline.

Well I ended up with a little over 4* down at the trans. and about the same up on the rear. So I'm happy with that. Need to sort the suspension before I order a driveshaft, but I think I'm looking Ok..:)
