Have the numbers checked by the DMV, before dropping down cash. You don't want to find out that the serial number is already in use. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Great I find the numbers on one now he won't sell it.... Any hambers in upstate ny have a doodle bug or rolling ch***is for sale ?
I finally convinced him to sell it to me. At least it will be built again and not rot away in the weeds. Thanks to all the advice I'll be asking more questions later.
So if I understand you correct you could have a frame and a motor with matching numbers but there is no way to tell what body was on them is that right? They told me it couldn't be done... So I'll try it.
It is just an incremental serial number. Ford may have had records, but they, if they ever existed, are long gone. Trust me, the A enthusiastis have been searching for decades, and have found nothing. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
The engines were numbered on the engine ***embly line. Then they were shipped to various ***embly plants around. As the ch***is came down the car ***embly line (without body) that number was stamped on the frame. The body was lowered on down the line. There is no way to tell what body came on a particular frame.
I realize this is a older post I'm hoping ill still get an answer, I do have all the #s from the frame and the engine and the trunk cab..my dilemma is... engine #s show a 29' frame shows a 30' & cab is a late 31' bud steel roof cab. Sense the cab is a 31' I would like to ***le as a 31.. my question is what is the right way to do the ***le???
And then you wind up with Tarrant county Texas. The engine numbers are used until I believe 1955, then they use the body number a1956 on had a 55 Buick(it had a body tag) that had no engine and was sold at a drug auction. No engine in car had to install an engine to get the ***le .what a mess!
You should check with your DMV but probably the frame number is what you need. What you have is pretty typical for a Model A. Over the years parts were swapped in and out depending on individual needs. I had a 4 door sedan once that was cut into a pickup apparently during the depression. I used it for parts.
Just for info: bought a '31 A tudor from Nebraska and it had a tag on the firewall with same ser# as the frame. After talking to the second owner still living in Nebraska I found out this was a common thing in that state, just made it easier to check ser#. Tag had NOTHING to do with Ford, strictly a local practice. Sheriff liked it when he verified ***le.
Do what some people have said, Get the numbers checked by the DMV. I know a guy in M*** that got hi model A hot rod registered by the frame numbers, and 2 years DMV contacted him and told him someone else had their restored model A registered with the same number. The hot rodder had sold the engine to some-one, and that guy used the engine numbers to get his car registered. The mess finally got straightened out, but his hotrod was off the road for about 2 years. If you get the ch***is with the engine and the engine and frame numbers match DON'T get rid of the engine.
Always the frame number. It does not matter what you "want" to register it as. You are not doing a numbers-matching restoration. Have it checked prior to doing any work. As Nick says, keep every single part with matching numbers.
