As many of "young" people, the first hot rod I've seen was the Kid. It was on the french TV. And it was the begining of a true p***ion, which has changed my life. Thanks a lot Mr Chapouris. R.I.P. Pete.

    Hello,

Have you ever tried making aluminum spun discs, like those favorites, Moon discs? Back in college, I needed some extra “filler” cl***es to graduate on time. So, I took this Art Metal cl*** that allowed us to use a furnace, aluminum, big lathes, and a full machine shop to create art designs. (Lost wax casting for gold/silver rings and bracelets, spun metal bowls, metal designs shaped on lathes, silk screen imprints on aluminum sheets, etc.) It was the most fun cl*** I had in all of those years of sweating out those college grades. I got to design, draw, do actual machining work, and use new techniques in art.

My fascination with spun aluminum Moon Discs goes way back to those early hot rod/custom car mags that I started reading back in the early 50’s. Seeing them on cars just made those vehicles look so much better to this little kid. After my brother got a set for his first car, I could not get happier. Plus, they were easy to draw later when I started to put down ideas on paper.

I tried my best to create a spun Moon Disc, but I could not get it right. I made several sizes, but they all looked like trays at restaurants. So the instructor told me to draw out a design, scale it down, and I could try to meet the “spun” project goal. It was a simple, small, miniature 7” disc shaped into a bowl with a matching lid. I called it a “Jeweled Racing Disc Bowl.” It started out flat, like the a spun disc and it had the curvature like a miniature Moon Disc. I made several as I knew the more I worked on it, mistakes were bound to happen. (I had a set of baby moon hubcaps!) But, I finally changed the wooden mold and used different shaping tools to create a bowl. (and matching lid/cover) It looked like those bowls you would have found in any “head shop” in So Cal at the time, but I made this one and got an “A.” Those bowls held change, jewelry, watches, beads, and other ***orted popular, late 60’s items…

I made two of the same smooth, spun bowls and acid-etched a fancy design on the tops of the lids to give the design some pizzaz. It was worthy of an “A.” That bowl/lid combo, after many years of service, bit the dust in one of my wife’s annual “get that #$%# out of the garage” clean up commands.

Yes, the “A” grade in this elective Art Metal cl*** allowed me to graduate on time and that cl*** ended my college career. This cl*** was like getting back to the fun, machining stuff like the old hot rod days of long ago. All college cl***es should have been like this super fun and creative cl***. I forgot to mention that the other cl*** that I had to take was this advanced photography cl*** that allowed us to transfer photos on to other medium, like a silk screened process.

    GMC FINISH.jpg Gentlemen,
It's been quite awhile since I posted on the Friday art show but you know, life gets in the way.
Our car group was getting ready to go to a show and I was taking some pictures as usual. When I got home several caught my eye, this one especially for all the reflected shapes. It's my buddy's 49 GMC pickup. The piece is done with Prismacolor pencils on white Stonehenge paper. The original is about 18 x 15 inches.
