After I reinstalled the need and seat on the 56 Chrysler Windsor carb. I noticed a slow leak when it threads in to the carb, leaking on to the intake manifold. I think I used some Teflon tape but cant remember{getting old ****s when you cant remember stuff}.Should I try a little more tape or any other suggestions?I don't want any fuel leaks on this baby going in to town like a big fire ball. LOL. Thanks Bruce.
I don't like using Teflon tape anywhere near a fuel system Bruce. A little piece of that tape breaking off and swimming around the carb will send you home on the back of a tow truck. Maybe a dab of fuel proof liquid epoxy will mend the seepage.
I use liquid telfon sealer on all fuel line fittings (that call for it) "just a dab will do" If you did use tape in the past you may have a hairline crack in the carb. Post an image of the fitting and carb (close up) "Fireball is a Buick engine".....lol Rick
You should determine exactly where is the leak AND the type of fitting which is leaking. I am ***uming from your post that the fuel line fitting which screws into the carburetor is leaking. These can be: (1) Straight thread, with a gasket between the fitting and the carb. (2) Tapered thread (pipe) If (1) above, the tape may be preventing the fitting from getting sufficiently tight for the gasket to seal. If this is the case, removal of the tape, rebuilding of the carburetor to remove any residue of the tape, and possibly facing the sealing surface will correct the issue. If (2) above, the tape (which is an excellent lubricant) MAY have allowed the fitting to be over-tightened, thus CRACKING the top of the carburetor. If this is true, then a different carburetor casting is in your future (after you have rebuilt the carb to remove all residue of the tape). I once thought I had found a legitimate use for teflon tape. We set out a couple of hundred saplings in our pasture. Dad was mowing the pasture, and his eyesight had deteriorated somewhat. I placed a steel post beside each sapling, with a piece of teflon tape waving in the breeze to catch his eye. Used white tape for pecan, and yellow tape for walnut. Worked fine for a couple of weeks until the deer ate the tape! And no, the deer showed no preference for white or yellow (perhaps they are color-blind). So still have no legitimate use for the tape! Certainly NEVER on fuel system components. Jon.
Bruce, There should be a fibre washer or copper gasket between the seat & fuel bowl. Your float/needle & seat problem could have started here, too.
Forget those old Mopars and go back to the Buicks!!! All BS aside, I would say check it out like CarbKing says.
Ricks Garage suggested some liquid telfon sealer on all my fuel line fittings to stop the leaks. I went and got some and put it on all the fuel line fittings . All the leaks have stopped. Thanks Rick. Bruce.
