I just bought a perfect running 50 Ford Flathead V-8 motor that just purrs when idling and has 60lbs. oil pressure too. It was in a small dump truck and I have a chance to buy the transmition. It has a creaper gear for 1st and is a 4 speed and looks much larger than a 39 Ford truck transmition. Are these transmitions ok for a street rod or am I wasting my time and money? Also are Ford truck blocks stronger than the car blocks or are they all the same? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Gary M.
I run the traney like that in two of my F-1 pickups. No not a good rod traney, requires double clutching to shift Fun but slow.Only diffrence in truck and car motor is lower compresion heads and the carb has differnt top which takes the truck aircleaner. Also this traney has the plate you remove to install a PTO you can use to run winches pumps ect.May be worth getting just for that.
Gentle Creatures, I am no expert, but I can add the following because I have owned and worked on it. In 1951-1952 Ford also had a "large" 3 speed toploader style tranny. It was the same size as the big 4 speed withe the PTO provision and 1 gear granny. Thing is this tranny has angle cut gears and 2nd & 3rd gear synchros, not straight cut like the old double clutcher you mentioned. Swear to Jesus, I got picks if you need them! This old cat we know had one bolted up behind a Nail head powered 46 Ford Sedan in the late 1950's, so it can take beatin, and with a little finesse it fits in a full size car. Also, some other differnces on truck motors, larger capacity oil pan with washout/slash inspection cover and the dip stick is different to, from 49-52 different water pumps, 5/8" wide belt with tab mount, similar to a mercury, but the tab is lower and the offset is even on both pumps cuz they share one belt, in 53 they went to a Ford passenger car style pump. Also, in most F2's, F3's and bigger trucks the good folks at Ford usually equipped them with factory adjustable lifters, kinda cool huh! I don't know if any of that was helpful, Love, Cheater Carl
