I've got a 60's Corvair dash shifter for my latest project to keep my floor clear but because they came with Powerglides this unit only has 4 detents for R,N,D,L and no provision for Park. I'm going to run a turbo 350 so my question is can I use the shifter and just have provisions for P-R-N-D with no real need for 2 or L or are there problems with my plan?....Bob
i remember that dash shifter in the `61 Corvair my mom drove me around in......how did it go into park?
There used to be a guy in Michigan that made an underdash shifter for 350 turbo's. I have one on my '32 and it works well. I'd have to find my receipts to figure out who it was. An internet search may do you some good. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Yes , that's the Windsor Fabrications shifter. That will be my next option but I'd like to try and use the Corvair unit I already have if I can.
See if there is enough room too lengthen the slot to add park or if you don't need anything but drive you should able to adjust it to go into park. It just wouldn't have manual 1st or 2nd. A trade off to use the shifter. Park would where reverse is and reverse would be in the N slot . Don't forget about your neutral/ park safety switch. Try and find an old Mopar dash shifter, they came in vans and pickups. That would give you all your gears.
'60s Dodge pickups had a nice looking dash shifter that is PRND2L pretty sure it's cable as well. (never mind i see southcross beat me to it) Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I've been looking at Dodge dash shifters but nice ones are pricey. The Corvair mechanism doesn't have room for an extra detent so I'll try and see if I can make it work as is. if not I'll look at the Windsor shifter because new it's less than decent used Dodge shifters.
If you can find a dodge shifter that works ,but its pitted just sand it down and paint it with black wrinkle paint and you can't see the pits in it . Much cheaper and looks good. Did the hood and trunk hinges on my last Morris Minor with it got plenty of good comments at car shows.
What problems with cable and linkages would I run into using a Mopar shifter to connect to a GM tranny?
It's a cable and the cable won't tell the shifter that its working a GM trans. You are going to have fabricate a bracket to hold the cable which you would have to do with the corvair shifter. The Mopar has the same shift pattern .The safety switch is in the trans on a Mopar so you will need a micro switch like a B&M shifter uses.
The Corvair shifter will work just as you said.... there just won't be any detents for second or low. My only question would be if the trans arm is the same length on the Vair PG and your trans so each detent moves the shifter arm far enough to change the gears
