I agree it is a great Vette. It would be very hard for me to pick my overall favorite as there were more than a few to choose from in my opinion. That includes Charlie's Wilson's Vicious Vette and Mr. Pickett (later renamed Vicious Vette) and Mazmanian and Skip Hess (Wildabeast) and a few others. Would be hard to beat a Chrysler though on nitro for real enjoyment. I have read that Art and Carol Yenter campaigned a 62 but I have never run across it. This car was I believe a 58-60 Vette. Here are a couple of other pictures of the car.
Looks like a 58 hood in the BM/SP picture. Sounds like a natural progression (of going faster), I wonder what other changes were done and if the car is still around. Nothing like a hot Vette!
My theory, ...."If General Motors intended the Corvette not to be cut up, they would have produced it with something more substantial than fibergl***!"
When I was a kid, there were some guys with a '63 split window that transplanted a hemi into it. They were going to race but decided the Vette was too nice to race and instead built a '36 Ford coupe with another hemi to race.
Iconic photo taken at the long gone Arlington Drag Strip, at the Arlington Air Port. That runway still just sits to this day. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
This photo was taken on the return road just past the finish line at the old Mission Raceway. The exit from the hot car pits is to the right rear of the car.
I'm fairly certain the photo of all the spectators behind the "beach fence" was taken at Shelton. That runway also still just sits. It was resurrected a few years for a couple of races, but apparently, some yahoo in a Camaro got closer to an active runway than allowed by FAA rules ((400 feet). I was told the reason Arlington went down was because another yahoo got to the end of the runway used for racing, and got onto an active runway. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Awesome having a hemi in a Vette. Wonder if it's still around. Sent from my SM-T377V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
When I tell people younger than me (I'm 71) that you could buy a used Corvette for $1000.00/$1500.00 in the early 60's, they look at me in disbelief. Used Corvettes were on car lots everywhere. I'm from the Pittsburgh area originally.
In the early/mid 70's - I remember (and think of this all too often!) a friend who bought a nearly perfect SL190 for $1000, someone else paid the same money for an SK120 (complete but albeit in pieces) and my boss rolled a truckload of (3) Model As back from Pennsylvania for not much more than that. We literally rolled one off the truck, put air in the tires, kerosene down into cylinders, gave it a running push start, popped the clutch and drove it down mainstreet (Amityville), belching smoke the whole way... Missed opportunities!!!!
I bought a '57 Vette with a 409 shoved in it in 1966/ $800.00 Eventually blew up the 409 and went to a 427..was a fast car,,but toward the end not really streetable. 1973 I bought this old racer '53 XK120se..only ***led for street about a year before I got it. $850 Still have it..but now.. It was converted to SBC in 1956. I have restored several 120s and E Types. This one seemed to need to be brought back as it raced.. SO.. 350SBC w/Muncie..double humps etc.. Of course it should be a punched 301",,but the 350 was close enough.. The Jaguar guys call it the "Heretic".. PS..If this doesn't belong here..just delete it..
