The article says his 14 year old son is helping him. Which could be another typo. The tag line under the photo says Ray and his son, possibly the next generation of custom car builders. Which is true.

The kid in the picture is Rays' son Larry. Doug Thompson is not Rays' son. I just got off the phone with my pal Jack Walker who was a good friend to both Ray and Doug. He confirmed it

Thanks for the info. Kind of weird the article talks a lot about Doug and never shows a picture of him. I guess I assumed it was Doug. Thanks for finding out the true story. I knew somebody would know, like Jack. I`ve always wondered about that since the first first time I read that article. I`ve edited my original post. I learn a lot on here like everybody else does. Thanks again.

Cool old pics. The bottom left one is a close up of the passenger side quarter panel of the 40 Merc, built by Bob Johnson, of Council Bluffs IA, Car is now in Richard Munz collection in Milwaukee WI. A real nice pic can be found online, google Richard Munz hotrodhotline

  15. Wow, lots of history in that block of pictures! The first car is the '41 Ford built by Larry Purcell of Colorado Springs. @straykatkustoms saw it at a show last fall and took these pictures. It's still alive and well and as beautiful as ever!

The '57 Chevy belonged to Pat Shaw of Longmont. It was chopped and had a '41 Chevy back window and '60 Chrysler taillights. I found a picture of it on Rikster's site.

I remember seeing the Anglia at a lot of local shows, indoor and outdoor. It was the most beautiful kandy orange you ever saw, with a wild silver metalflaked top with kandy orange cobwebbing. It had "Kidd" lettered on the door in gold--might have been gold leaf, I don't remember. We always called it the "Kiddie Car".
I remember seeing the chopped Impala at a lot of shows way back when, but I have no information on it.
Yes, that is the "Sweeter Than Wine" car. It was a '40 Mercury convertible built and owned by Bob Johnson of Council Bluffs, Iowa. It had "VINO" on the license plates because of the beautiful kandy brandywine paint. Bob was a regular at a lot of the early Leadsleds. I was lucky enough to find a picture of it as well. E

One of my top 10 custom pic`s, and one of the customs I saw early on and often. The first pic was taken in Des Moines in 82 KKOA show Scan0104.jpg Scan0103.jpg and the other a little later. I love the song---Sweeter Than Wine. Sad to say--Bob passed away in May of 2016.

  17. Great pics, Jim! Love the Studebaker taillights. They work well on this car.
Sorry to hear of Mr. Johnson's passing. E

lbf100, NO, the ColoRODans of Longmont no longer put on the event...matter of fact, for the last few years, they hosted a downtown cruise on Main Street on Saturday nite and a show in the local park on Sunday, which attracted upwards of 600 cars. However, this past summer, they cancelled the cruise and the event altogether because of locals and their trucks. Those locals owned diesel trucks that were modified to blow black exhaust out the tailpipes, they called this "rolling coal." It clouded up the cruise so bad, to say their involvement ruined the cruise would be an understatement...

  19. The Ty Johnson Chevy! Originally built by Starbird. Is that a recent photo?

  20. Hey, I know that car! :D I've been missing it....it's been with Aaron Lawrence at his shop Fast Al's Upholstery getting new carpet. I get the big reveal tomorrow night when I pick it up. Can't wait. All I've seen is this spy pic....

That's sad. I'm glad that those trucks haven't become interested in the Golden Supercruise nights. Maybe the constant police presence in Golden keeps them from playing their stupid games. I have a hard time understanding their need to blow smoke. I drive a Dodge turbodiesel truck, and it runs beautifully clean from the factory, with gobs more power than you can use, until you're pulling a loaded trailer up Floyd Hill, anyway. I wonder why people feel any need to make those trucks noisier and smokier, or more powerful. Then I realize that I'm at the HAMB posting my rhetorical question, and I'm sure there are some people on the site who could tell me why noise and smoke and more power are a good thing. I'm just glad that the custom side of the hot rod world has made quiet mufflers popular.

Love this '55 Chevy and the package tray is a kool idea. It may not be all that comfortable but sometimes kool isn't comfortable. Does any one have any more pics?

The following posts are pics from Craig Owens here on the HAMB. I'm on his email list and he sends out a lot of kool car activity pics from his Santa Rosa CA location. I've plucked out the Kustom stuff for our enjoyment 22348789385_07c01d082c_z.jpg
