I am having trouble deciding what to do on the front end of my '53 chevy and I was wondering if any of you have put a 1930's style grille on a 50's kustom?
Are you talking Model A, Deuce, Plymouth shape? I think it's too narrow to look good...but, if you should attempt it, post some pix, I 'd like to see your solution. R-
no...it doesn't follow the ten year rule...basically if it wasn't produced within 10 years from the year of the car you are modifying then it almost never looks right! i.e. putting molded plastic side mirrors on a 40 ford.
I know that if I try it I'd have tons of work to make it look good. I plan on cutting an existing grille down, reforming the front of my hood to come to a point about 2'' farther out, filling the open space with some concave pieces on the sides of it about 8-10'' to each side, cutting down my bumpers so the grille can be even with the bottom of them. Hopefully it can make a radical custom.
Heheh...the Rolls Royce conversion for Beetles comes to mind. I'm not usually one to stifle anyone's creative thoughts, but think really, really hard before you cut stuff up. Play with it in Photoshop if you have to, and try to remember that truly good design is not often achieved when the goal is simply to be different. But if you want one of those cars that makes people look (thinking train wreck here...or maybe that mopar with the backwards roof that was on egay not long ago), then RUN to the shop and git on it! No no no, Train Wreck was a 20's Dodge touring car cowl grafted onto a narrowed MG midget body with a 34 Chevy grille and a GMC 305 V6 truck engine in it. It's been taken over by another HAMB member and now has a different frame and a big Caddy for power.
