I've done this so far with my son, and he's been a real help, not sure what to do next, we want to stay traditional but I'd like to lower the truck, and power steering. Can this be done at reasonable cost? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
clean and well appointed but no where near traditional................you asked.............my 2 cents
The 1973 Black finished valve covers and air cleaner top are the turn off. I had one of the first sets of black SBC Weiand valve covers sold on my T bucket about that time frame as the black was the hot lick then. Nice, clean and slick but the polished version of each would have been a lot more traditional for an early 60's or earlier build. You really cleaned up a mess nicely though.
Lowering can be done fairly inexpensively and the power steering will a bit more. What year and is it the factory ch***is/suspension etc? Tell us about those and how much you'd like to lower it and we can give some pointers. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Much improved over the before. Nice to see you and your son involved. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
A lot cleaner that the original abomination. Changing the valve covers and air cleaner to period correct traditional items will definitely improve the aesthetics IMHO. Strange how my tastes have changed with the ravages of time.
Hey SP, That new look is pretty nice. Traditional is ok, but who is going to look at your motor compartment and say...oh, not traditional...? They/we will look at a super clean compartment and say how cool is that. With everything in its place, it certainly looks nice and spiffy...at car shows, cars and coffee, rod runs, family events, etc. They will all have a comment or two just because it looks so good. Plus, working with your son is the most important thing. You guys did a great job and should be proud with the work that is finished. Being involved with anything a son/daughter does will be forever ingrained into their minds for history. As for the future? Let him drive it around? (16 + of course)... or start asking him what he would like to do on the truck to continue this cool relationship. A small digital camera for him will allow him to show you what he is seeing in old cars and trucks at shows, c/c events, etc. That should give you ideas coming from him. Jnaki
Big improvement! I have left my 59 pickup stock height, with original manual steering and drum brakes, for 4 decades...even though it's had a few different big blocks in it, starting in 1979. I used to think about adding PS, but decided it really isn't necessary. And the ride height...well, I guess it's cool these days to lower trucks, but when I started on mine, it was not.
Thanks guys, I tend to use incorrect terminology here, and there are a lot of big time purists on this forum! I'm just looking to spruce up the ol girl. I've talked a lot with squirrel on here and that man knows his stuff! When I said traditional, I was referring to when I lower the truck (55 Chevy, series 2) I first came on and talked about the truck I was sure I wanted the mustang 2 front end, but then verde and squirrel and several others asked me why not keep what the truck came with (solid axle and leafs) thus the word traditional. I really would like to go that route. I seiously would like to lower 4 and 5 inches. I've got to make the brakes work better and it would really help my son and wife if it had power steering. Someone told me about mono leaf, ( in the same breath, told me they ride badly and could be dangerous ) so I don't know which way to go about it. I've told the guys before that when this truck is done I'm going to give it to my son, (he's 16 today) with the stipulation that he keep excellent grades and keeps his job to show he can be responsible. My son still has his truck looking pretty much like it did when he and I built it ten years ago...it's hard to remember, but when we were young, modifying a vehicle took some gumption, and today it takes a whole lot more, it seems (there are so many new distractions, in the old days we only had girls to keep us busy).
Looks really good Skinny. And that you & your son did it is even cooler yet, memories made. The air cleaner & valve covers aren't the flavor here, but that you like it is the important part. 20 minutes & a socket and it becomes a different animal if you ever chose. Great job.
The engine looks considerable better with the new breather & valve covers as does the clean routing of the wires and hoses.P Big improvement, very cool! HRP
Really nice and tidy. The intake came out great, looks like new. What did you use on it to get it to look so good?
Great job!!! It looks very nice and something your boy can be proud to show off and be able to say he did. That's important. It's traditional enough, don't let let these guys discourage your progress. This is how my dad started me out too and it forged a relationship and memories between us that made me who I am today. I'm p***ing it on to my daughter now. Good for you on being involved with your son. You won't regret this experience. Please keep updating us. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
You and your son have done a great job on the truck! Some real solid work. Looks very nice. Good for you guys, keep it up.
Cool? - yes, it is Cool that you have your Son (age?) helping you - and cleaning up the engine compartment - using the black trendy parts not so much - post some pics of truck - lowering 4-5" can be involved as far as far as steering geometry goes - there are likely brackets available to install a later steering box with better turning ratio - since the whole family will be sharing driving time might consider a disc brake conversion - plenty of owners of these trucks here, and other sites, with lots of info on what works best
Great father and son project gentlemen, I like it. As for lowering it, that's up to you and your son. When my father and I were lowering my F-100 we just pulled a couple of leaves front and rear and that brought it down a bit. Later on I installed a volare front end and lowered spring shackles in the rear. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
