Hot Rods Narrow a tube axle

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by coololdcars, Jan 25, 2017.

  1. I have done Econoline type beam axles before, z-cutting, and fishplating the weld, but what are you guys take on narrowing a straight tube axle ???

  2. You should be able to slug it. I wouldn't be afraid to.

Edit: spell check kicked my ass again I should have read wouldn't not would. :(

I had Challenger make me one of their 4 inch dropped 1/4 wall tube axle to fit my Vega. They didn't care how wide I wanted it.

Too common a name to find their site. Got a link or city?

Follow what Rootie shows and you can't go wrong. It will be just as strong as it is now.

Challenger Sprint cars was Ken Jenkins' company. Unfortunately Ken passed away about 3 or 4 years ago. But I guess you could contact other sprint car chassis builders.

I agree! Rootie posted a great tutorial. Never done a tube axle but that's exactly how I shortened the hollow steering shaft on my AV8. Regards, Dave.

Cut it in half and measure how thick it is. If it is too thin then you needed a new axle anyway.

Drill a small hole to measure wall thickness ??
    Weld it up afterwards.
    Save ruining a usable axle.
