Technical Dual Exhaust For My '40

A common practice but apparently not a simple search. The engine is 59A in a stock ch***is, with 59A manifolds. Who makes a good set of pipes with quiet mufflers. Feel like getting them installed before I put the body back on. Thanks: Fred A

 

Red's headers are good, and it would probably be cheaper to take it to a muffler guy and have him make the exhaust.

Flatheads are quiet already, so a set of gl***packs sound good and aren't loud.

 

I'll second Reds. I run a set and they look nice and fit great. I used a set of Smithys and ran 2 1/4" out the back. Sounds great!. I joined them with V band clamps for easy dis***embly.

 

I went to Red's sight and didn't find exhaust systems without headers or to fit Fentons. Guess I'll try again. Thanks: Fred A

 

Are you using the stock steering box. I did a 39 with a GM box and Red's headers would not clear the box. Had to remake the center tube on the driver side.

 

For our 32, I picked up a a set of nice header flanges from Speedway. Had our local muffler shop craft up the headers. We run dual straight pipes back with interior baffles. Ya could easily add mufflers. I like the V band idea to make things easier......

 

Bottom line--you don't need headers. They are a waste on a stock or mildly modified flathead.
Go to your local muffler shop & have pipes bent up to fit the 59A manifolds +mufflers of your choice & tailpipes. Quick & easy. Most likely much cheaper than Red's.
Don't know if Red is even doing business any more.

 

That is so true...but then again this is a hot rod forum and Confucius say, man with hot rod - burn rubber.

 

They are not cheap but what a nice way to install exhaust. No gaskets, they don't take up much real estate under the car and they provide a nice tight seal. Something NASA and penguins everywhere long for.

 

Give them a call. I have a set of Red's exhaust extensions from the manifold to the mufflers on my '40 stake truck. I called them a while back, and he said that he wasn't currently making them, but expected to be able to get some cranked out in the near future. They fit real nicely, however, the driver's side is kind of a pain to get bolted up to the manifold, as the rearward stud is in a rather tight spot. You can access the front one from underneath the car, but the rear one I had to reach from the top side. They are 1 3/4" diameter. You can use whatever muffler you would like, from there. I chose short Walker 24041's on my truck. I had a local shop run the tailpipes out to the back in a 1 3/4", and you can barely hear the truck when going down the road from inside the cab.



And when the heat risers are capped, they rap pretty cool, too!

Yeah, it doesn't take much to entertain me! It rapped pretty good for a few hundred miles, but apparently I blew the plugs out of the riser holes. I pulled the Offy intake off, a few months later, and there was nothing left blocking the risers.

 

^^^^^ drive 'em like you stole 'em. Tow 'em home, fix 'em and repeat.

 

Snaking around the pedals and master cyl. in the stock location is the headache and p***ing through the frame holes requires a talented operator of the pipe bender.
You can position the pipes as wide as the fuel tank or use "S" bends around the tank to space closer together.

 

I've also run into problems with duals too close to my master cylinder causing it to heat up on hot days. This heat increases pressure in the system causing the brakes to lock up.

Blasphemy I know, but I have never gotten anything real out of headers on my '40s of which I've had seven, the two with overheads a different story. Just want dual exhaust with good mufflers. The current project is still a little raw and noisy. Even single exhaust is no tragedy on the busy streets around here. If I get even more polarized that late 60 may be called into service. Perhaps going a bit hyper, or is that hypo. The 59a can stand quite a bit of practical driving with any exhaust. Thanks for the responses: Fred A

 

If you are looking for a pre made, bolt on, dual exhaust kit for your '40 all I can say is Good Luck. I'm pretty sure you aren't going to find anything. That's what good muffler shops are for.

 

I can't stress how much I love this car. Hopefully someday I may have something similar as a driver and get out from behind a airbag and microchips.
