Seems I have an issue with the crank dampener pulley and the (short) water pump pulley.
They do not match up? The dampener pulley is in towards the block about 1/4".
Do I have the wrong pulley(s)/dampener or water pump?

You know they make spacers for this problem.

if you use a 1/2" spacer you will need to get a longer crank bolt as well. The crank bolt will only be engage about 1/4 to 1/3 inch. you want more thread engagement if you want to be able to crank the motor over with out having to pull all the plugs out first.

The pulley on the harmonic balancer should stick out pretty far

I'm thinking that may be the wrong pump pulley for that setup.
When I was switching back and forth between short pumps and long pumps on the 350 in my 71 GMC I had to try several out of my stash before getting the pulleys to line up right.

Don, Those are for the water pump pulley, the crank pulley ones look just like it only bigger basically. I have a bucket filled with Chevy crank and water pump pulleys just to match up good pairs. They are some that are a little different though the years and dont quite match up with other pulleys sometimes.

i tend to agree you. Try to find a water pump pulley that will match up with your crank pulley before putting a spacer in behind the crank pulley.

...............You're right, Jason. In my haste I miss-read his post. Like you guys have suggested, I would attempt to find a different pulley that would line up better and not use any spacers at all if possible.

You'd be surprised but there are many SBCwater pump pullies for different applications. I tried 3 before I got one that lined up with a single groove flat crank pulley.

**EDIT. The conclusion to that story is I bought a chrome single groove pulley set off of ebay. I ***umed if they sell them together they should work!

Might check the pulley mounting flange on the water pump shaft. I've seen them not pressed on far enough to line up correctly after they were rebuilt. Just a thought... o_O

    Thanks all.
I prefer to "fix" the crank pulley as the alternator pulley and bracket was set up to match the water pump pulley.

The water pump pulley is down properly.

I have had to press the hub further on the shaft on both of the last two pumps I installed.

I've never seen a short pump pulley with a straight snout like that. I agree with wrong pump pulley.

Alan Grove Components has a good write up on the pulleys on his website. He also sells the correct GM pulleys and his prices are reasonable. I found out a long time ago that buying new is better than spending a day wandering around a junk yard looking at greasy and worn out old pulleys. Just my opinion for what it's worth.

Right! The short pump pulley is more V shaped, not straight sided

I ran into this problem a few years back, there were different hub depths on the short water pumps.

It's easy to fix if you have a press.

Looks like the wrong pulley for the short pump. You need the one that is more cone shaped, I believe.

Paul's right...the more conical shaped one is 1/4"+/- deeper, and greater diameter at pulley, clearing the casting nicely.
A word to any of the guys wanting to move the flange rearward on their water pump:
First remove the back cover, then support the shaft rear at the impeller. Otherwise, moving the shaft inward of the seal will cause INSTANT water pump leakage!

    Ok
    Thanks for all the input.
I had no pump, pulleys or balancer that came with this engine as it was a block that had been worked on tanked, mag'd then (.60 over) but never sold. So yes, it has been a found this one, got that some where else deal.
I'll look into Alan Grove Components.
