With friends like that.................... Can't tell you how many times I sold something at cost that was worth significantly more, with the understanding that if they sell it, I want first crack at it even if priced higher because I really didn't want to sell it in the first damn place and was doing them a favor. Not once did that work out:(. I can however tell you how many time it will happen in the future. Anybody reading this take heed and learn from my mistakes. Some "friends" (and family for that matter) will take advantage of good will.

Aggravation Tax............. I like that. Or maybe just, "Your price on this item is..." with the price adjusted up or down based on the guy's approach/at***ude.

I feel the same way. I love the show and what they find but now too many at swapmeets want to follow suit and think their junk is worth $$$$$. I think I'll just start telling them to call the History Channel and see if Mike and Frank will stop by.

You still die, toys or not. We just moved and I cleared out a lot of junk for it. There's a lot of cool things I want but then all I do is think about this move and I p*** on many deals for that reason.

Even if it is something I need, the guy that doesnt bother to price his stuff can pound salt,I keep walking. How many times have you said at this spot, what do you want for that and they reply..whats it worth to you?I like to have fun but at the same time Iam all business.

Probably does it on purpose. Figures if you'll go to the trouble to track him down and make inquiry, he's got you on the hook. He's got it, you want it and he can name his price. Yeah, best to just keep walking.

I think a lot of us feel the same way. Going on a treasure hunt is fun because you never know what you might find. That's why we watch. Then we despise it because we're not the ones finding treasure while good bargains get harder to find.

Had a guy with a "want to buy" ad on CL. Stated in ad that he was looking for "good condition" used part for $**. I had exact part NIB that I would let go for his price. I answered ad offering new part for HIS price and his reply was "I'm a little short of money right now. I'll get back to you." WTH? Never answered him when he tried to contact me 2 weeks later. (I gave part to Hamber for shipping cost.)

My answer for "Will you take $** for it" is "When I see your money ON the table, I will decide". It's just the reverse of a buyer waving a stack of bills in front of you with an offer. Make him show you that he is qualified to even make an offer. Have closed deals from $2 to $100k with same line. Everybody immediately knows where the B.S. stops.

I think a swap meet is the ultimate it's only worth what someone is willing to pay. Buyer can offer up **. Seller can say no or counteroffer. I think guys who say offers are " insulting" should stay in the garage with their hoard and keep cursing the world. It's and offer. Take it or leave it or work from there. I think a lot of the sellers look at the buyers as the enemy. Like a jaded worn out school teacher. Quit teaching! And as a buyer, be willing to walk away and forget about it. I sure liked swap meets pre internet though. Seems like there was less at***ude and ******** from both parties. And the " ***hole tax or P.I.A ( pain in the ***) fee is awesome. If someone's being a **** let em have it. We apply this regularly at our shop. I love swap meets, I love tables full of parts. But sometimes I just shake my head and move along. Will you accept my offer of 2 cents??

The old guy that I knew who had several (4 or 5, I think, may be 6) 4-71 manifolds for the SBC p***ed away in January. The very guy who turned down an offer of $600 for one (missing an ear, and in need of several Helicoils).

His family s****ped his whole lot, and paid to have it hauled away.

I suppose this would be considered very good news for someone selling one for $2000.00 on eBay. The market just got tighter.

Nothing quite like destroying some rare things to make the remainder more valuable.

Only on the Hamb do you hear stories of 'family' orientated hot-rodding. Most of the guys I know, like myself, do not have kids/nephews etc interested in that 'old car-****' so who ever is in charge of the estate will deal with the shop in the least obtrusive manner possible.
On occasion I have attended estate sales just to find other old(er) guys there to pick the bones and just as often, the company holding the sale has watched too much tv.

My son an I sell occasionally at the Long Beach Performance Swap in SoCal. If it's cast iron it's going to a new home. If it's GMC6 stuff it's a **** shoot, some try to by it for junk and others know the value. We don't bring anything we want to bring home but are firm with the good parts. I love to go up in price when a "cagey" guy thinks he's pulling a fast one. He offers and I raise the price as much as he cuts it. They always say "you can't go up" and I reply "why not, you went down" some get it and some don't. Some day my children will sell off all they don't want and thank god they know it's true value and not some TV price...good luck.

  19. Just yesterday a package arrived in the mail. I brought it into the house and opened it up on the kitchen table. It was a new set of IH gauges oil pressure ampmeter and burbon tube temp guage I had bought on E bay for $24 & free shipping. I put them back in the boxes and stated Im taking them over to the store building. My wife stated let me get a pen and mark what they are so when they sell at your estate sale everyone will know what it is for!

When I worked in sales (5 years) we were always told, "When the customer's hand hits the door, drop your price but JUSTIFY WHY." To me, the same applies when ASKING for a discount: it's all in the at***ude and why the price should drop. We were also taught that one of the best questions to ask is "What would it take for you to buy it TODAY?" If they came back the next day they got hit with the AH tax.
Drove me nuts when I tried to sell off some old water cooled VW parts at give away prices and there were no takers, but when it came out that I threw them away I was branded as either throwing away money or as a fool. A co worker told me that sometimes it's worth it to just dump the stuff to get the floor space back: the lowball price only hurts for a little while.
On a similar note to the unpriced stuff at a swap meet: I usually just watch and try to learn here (thanks for the knowledge everyone), but would someone mind explaining why I'm not seeing prices on many of the cars for sale in the forums here? I need to get into a "H.A.M.B. approved" ride, but can't find many of the prices. (And yes, if I don't see a price listed at the bottom of the ad I refuse to read the car description) Am I doing something wrong that causes the $ not to show?

nothing like a HAMB swap meet *****fest with my morning coffee:)

I bought at swaps and sold on ebay for 5 years straight. my trusty radio flyer had a good $60,000.00 + worth of sales hauled in it. I am the ***hole that lowballs and insults everyone with every purchase. I'm the guy that offers you 50 bucks for a box of misc 1940 Chevrolet parts even though there is a $75.00 hood ornament in there and gets $500.000 out of the box of junk on ebay. I have purchased a guys complete pile of swap meet junk more than once. I had a list in my head of items that are cheap at swaps but are hard to find when you live in Bum**** Nebraska like 265 valve covers, they are a dime a dozen here in California and I was getting 40 -50 bucks a pair.

now I don't even go half the time. Turlock swap was this weekend and I stayed home

Prices don't show properly using the HAMB app. You need to view the ads in a browser.

As that guy in Bum****, Nebraska who has a hard time finding parts, I appreciate that you USED to help supply me, and I certainly don't fault you for making a buck by re-selling swap meet parts. While I've never actually lived in Nebraska, I've spent all my life within a couple hours of there. So the smile you provided me this morning deserves a link to a picture of one of Nebraska's coolest monuments, one any HAMBer should enjoy: Carhenge . . . . It's near Alliance, in northwest Nebraska, which is very nearby Bum****. Some crazy rancher has re-created Stonehenge using old cars instead of rocks. I suspect some of those hot rodders over in Bum**** have probably stripped a part or two off these cars:

Too funny!!! Yes, it does! I immediately walk away unless it is something I MUST have, which has been never.
