Does anyone know of anyone selling a straight 30" column that would work on vintage wheels? I have a 58 Ford wheel...never figured it'd be so difficult to find a manufacture that would produce a straight shaft...no tilt

    Thanks for any info!!

Go to any OLD junk yard they have lots of them.

  3. I have a 59 wheel and column in my cabriolet, works great.

  4. Unfortunately, pretty much all aftermarket columns use the GM wheel splines and GM turn signal switches. It's possible to modify the wheel to bolt to a GM adaptor, but it'll be far easier to just track down a '50s/early 60s Ford column. You may even be able to go into the late '60s, but you'll need to verify that.

  5. Not sure exactly what your trying to do here but,,, 58 was first year in the Car for a solid steering shaft. 51-57 shared the same spline but had the Horn wire down through the Box. If you want everything to work sig's and horn and absolutely Nothing else on the column go find yourself a 1960-65 Truck factory 4 speed Column. Now you have a Lower shaft bearing issue but very easy to solve. You just need to know what or how your connecting link will be to your steering gear. Need more info? Just be a bit more specific as to what your doing.

Sorry fellas....alls I'm looking to do is run my 58 ford wheel in my 31 Ford coupe...maybe I'll just look for an old Ford steering column, I just never figured it'd be so difficult hunting down a column....I just want basically a shaft and housing no electronics. Don't have to be pretty just something that will work.

That 55-56 T Bird column is a telescopic column.

Going to use the rack that came with it for now...may leave it not sure but I'm just trying to get what I absolutely need to get it on the street.

It don't look like a telescopic column...I'll post a pic

I'm not going for total traditional...leaning towards late 60s early 70s style but yet keeping my twists....so the more I look at the dumb rack the more I like the cleanliness it adds to the front....especially since I've dumped a major load of the funds into the 37 tube set up...I'm running full fenders...nose up a bit, mild gasser style.[IMG]

  17. That column you posted a photo of is NOT a T-Bird column. It's an aftermarket like any "I did it" style. You can however if you are so inclined install it in any T-Bird. Also your 58 wheel will not work on it.
Sorry to give you the bad news. I like what your trying to do over all.

The column photo you posted also looks to be a 'tilt' column. Count the levers...1 Shifter, 1 Blinker, and 1 Tilt lever. I'd send it back without even taking it out of the box. Just keep looking for an early column.

I can't remember when Ford went from the very early 'key-way' to the 'splined' shaft. But, there should be several years of Ford columns that will suit your needs.

Ford went to a dished steering wheel in 1956 the 1952-55 had a flat wheel so the steering column was longer guys in my Ford group found that out, since so much is available for early 60's Mustangs that might be a shorter column so there may be used ones out there after guys have done upgrades. Like this one maybe contact seller for measurements: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-1966-1...ash=item41bb309244:g:vgIAAOSw-0xYa89y&vxp=mtr

  21. You need to know that to the best of my knowledge nobody makes an aftermarket column that will let you bolt a 58 Ford wheel directly on and have horn and signal switch work. That photo appears to be all GM targeted. So, spline and horn mechanism along with signal cancel unit is Wrong. Your going to need a factory Ford unit to use the wheel you have and be non tilt.

  22. If your building a Race focused car and signals and horn on the column is not something you want/need then you don't really need a complete column. Just the shaft and support bearing was very common. In fact, more common than a complete unit.

Eh...if it tilts and will work I'd be ok with it...but Pist-n-broke says it won't work with the 58 wheel....I guess I'll find out.

Yeah signals, horn function is not my worries...I do plan on running street/strip, but I could wire in my own electronics.

Who did you buy the column from, or who made it. Did you see the thread of the columns sold by the Hoffman Group that were falling apart? Made in China of coarse.

I contacted them earlier and told them I did not want it after asking them if it was actually made for a ford wheel....and they told me to use an adapter, I told them there is no adapter to refund my cash...so they are but ebay takes days to refund money back. Wouldn't even alow me to cancel the order just says it's to late.
