Brootal on Tour: Europe, June-July

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Brootal, Apr 2, 2006.

  1. Apologies to Drewfus for stealing his catchy****le. :)

Originally the plan was to go to Europe and then have babies, but somewhere along the line things got a little mixed up.

So, even though we can't really afford to go, we figure can't really afford NOT to go. Neither of us want to wait 20 years before we can afford to travel again, so we figured we'd just go this year.

No firm dates or solid plans yet. Most likely we'll head to the UK first, catch up with an old friend, head up to Scotland (my wife's ancestry) and then cross the Channel, get one of those short term lease 'rental' cars and take in as much of Europer as we can.

I figure we'll take in some of France, Monaco, head up through Switzerland, maybe Holland, definitely Scandinavia, would love to see Prague and then head down through Germany (Go Australia! Maybe catch a World Cup game), catch up with my wife's aunt who will be singing in Salzburg, and then head down to the Dalmatian coast (where my family is from) and hang out on the beach for a while.

Would love to meet some of the Euro HAMBsters and catch a couple of car events if the planets line up right.

Yes, I will be bringing my wife, Sue and son, Luka. :)

If you´re coming to Skandinavia, you have to visit Finland. Let me know the dates and I´ll inform you about the events.

If you pass through Grenoble be sure to visit Gilles (Frenchrodder on the RRT)
I missed him by minutes in 2001.

I'll be landing in Frankfurt on about 17 July, and be spending the next two weeks touring Germany and Austria with "140 of my closest friends" I'll be a chaperone/equipment manager with a marching band on tour. We'll be playing is Salzburg, maybe we can play while your aunt sings :)

Look for Roddin28 and Baumi here on the HAMB. EXCELLENT and WONDERFUL guys in the Hep Demons car club. Roddin28 is in Austria and Baumi is in Germany. Also there is Slapshot and MightySam in Beligum if you hit there.

    He's picky about bread.

  15. That is EXACTLY the plan, Drewfus. :)

As are most people with a European background that DIDN'T grow up eating bread that looks and tastes like FOAM!

    Bloody Skips... :)

DATES: So far it looks as if we'll be going for 6-7weeks, all of June and into July. My wife's sister is a travel agent and we'll be seeing her tonight to nut a few things out.

Its_a_nick: Be warned, we WILL take you up on any offers for free accommodation. Would be good to meet and talk about good ol' Sydneytown. :)

Check the OITH message board for car shows in the Germany/ Austria area. There should be plenty of them in June and July.
Just drop me a line when you´re around here, you´re welcome anytime!

  18. Thanks for that Baumi, I'll check it out.

Haven't updated the thread because we were waiting to hear back from the travel agent (my wife's sister!). Sat down the other night and here's a rough itinerary...

Fly into London on May 30. Spend a few nights there and catch up with a couple of friends.

My wife's grandfather was from Aberdeen, so we'll head up to Scotland, stopping in Newcastle on the way. We'll spend another 3-4 days hanging around Scotland, doing the Whisky Drive and checking out the countryside.

Then we'll fly to Paris (June 10) and pick up a short-term lease hire car. Spend some time in Paris (2-3 nights) and then head down to Lyon and on to Nice/Monte Carlo. Check out the French Riviera and then head North through Switzerland, maybe taking in Milan on the way.

My plan is to get to Stuttgart before June 22nd to watch Australia play Croatia in the World Cup. I don't have a ticket, so if anyone has a spare, let me know. :)

From there we'll head to Prague, Vienna and then to Salzburg by June 30 to see my wife's Aunt sing in a choir as part of Mozart's 250th Birthday celebration (or maybe he died 250 years ago??)

We'll then head down to Croatia and get to my Dad's birthplace on the Dalmatian Coast around July 5. We'll hang around for a week getting our breath back and then head across to Italy to check out the tourist sites.

As it's not much more expensive to go around the world, we thought we'd come home via the US. So, we'll fly out of Rome July 20, head to NYC for a few days and then fly to San Fran around July 27 and hang around for a couple of days (not long enough... :( )

We'll then fly out on July 29, stop in Melbourne, Australia to catch up with some friends and then home on July 31.

    After that, I'll need a holiday!!! :)

I'd love to catch up with a few Euro-HAMBers, so if it looks like I'm heading past your place, let me know and we'll try to hook up.

  19. I'm coming over for that one too!

    :D

  20. Just bumping this BTTT. We'll be arriving in London in two weeks time. Can't wait!

Kinda getting organised, new stroller for the boy, booked accomodation in a couple of hostels and pretty much worked out our itinerary.

We had to cut our time in the UK as we were going to be too rushed getting to Germany, so we now leave for Paris on June 7th.

Looks like it'll be the 'I missed it by a few days' trip. Billing in the UK, French Nationals, then the Euro Nationals will all be on a few days AFTER I pass through the area.

Oh well... maybe I'll see some hot rods on the side of the road. :)

  22. There's a couple of things on, actually.

The French Street Rod Nats are on in June (17-18 I think) and the European Street Rod Nats are on in Germany about a month later. :)

I'll miss both by a couple of days... :(

Anyhow, THIS IS A ONE WEEK WARNING! ;)

We fly out in a week, so any HAMBers along the way, feel free to contact me.

I've set up a blog site (not much in it yet) for our trip.

    We'll soon find out:rolleyes:

  26. I was in Vienna a few years ago in December. It was 25 below outside, but I didn't have much time to check the place out. Went to the Christmas markets and while I was there I had to buy another pair of gloves!

Just about got frostbite getting the money out of my wallet. Nothing a bit of mulled wine couldn't fix.

I've always been of the belief that as an Aussie, there's no need to go for a summer holiday. I'd much rather go skiing or head somewhere in winter. Last week we had 3-4 days where it was almost 30 degrees and not a cloud in the sky... and it's the middle of winter!!!

Gotta love that Aussie weather (Melbourne and Tasmania excluded!) ;)

  27. Boris, say hello to England for me - I still miss it - sometimes. Have a good time and have a few pints of "Bitter" for me.

    Cheers

    Bob

If you can fit it in your time schedule, then theres the "Bedrock" meet in Denmark the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of june! Its a real cool tradtional (Pre 54) meet where there will be a lot of cool bands from Sweden, US and more. Cars from Germany, Sweden, Finland, Norway and of course Denmark. Its not that big an event, but its so cool! :) If the weather is ok, there will probably also be a dirttrack race!
