Haven't been on in a few years but here I am. Looking for anyone who knows much about FE parts. I've got a 58 Edsel ranger with a 361 FE in it. Got it all rebuilt but one final piece I can't find. I'm looking for the press in fitting on the front of the intake manifold. The opening in the intake is 7/8 and not threaded, like I mentioned, press in. It connects to the waterpump with a 3/4 hose about 3 inches long. I can't find it for the life of me. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
NAPA used to carry them but finding someone to look it up could be a problem. I see them listed at Dearborn Cl***ics.
That hose connection was larger on the early intakes that have the oil fill tube in the intake manifold. Beginning in 65 it was a smaller diameter steel pipe. So you need a 1964 or older part.
I would drill and tap NPT , and never look back . Those OEM *******s will leak at the worst times . NPT fitting is a life time replacement
Let me ask you this. Do you have a Temp sender in your intake manifold. If not that part also is cast with the temp sender port in it. Makes it double tough to find. Took me 3 years to find on for my 59 Ford. That piece is Pot Metal and rots away all by itself. If you had the manifold Hot Tanked in costic with it still in it, the Tank eat it. The Wizzard
I did have it hot tanked, not sure if caustic was used. Had the engine rebuilt locally by a reputable machine shop. I know the fitting was in it when it went in. They re***embled the whole engine and I'd rather not pull it apart to tap it out. Thanks to everyone for the info.
You will not have to pull the engine apart to tap it out. Its in the water jackets. Any metal debris from tapping will be too small to hurt anything. And you will be able to remove the lions share with a vacuum cleaner.
Alright that just might be the winner then. I appreciate it. I had thought about tapping it but like I mentioned, worried that I would get debris in the intake. Gonna look into that today. Thanks again. Here's some pictures of when I got it back and now that I've got it painted.
Tip for all. When using a thread tap and not wanting any chips to fall in pack the flutes of the tap with wheel bearing grease. The chips will stick in the grease and come out with the Tap. I looked into doing a pipe fitting repair also. With the need for Temp sender and tight space I chose not to do it. The other and easier option is to go to a 60 and later manifold. I also chose not to do that. My 59 is a One owner unrestored Virgin and wanted to keep it that way. Notice my 59 Edsel wagon in the background. The Wizzard
I appreciate that tip on the grease. I guess I didn't pay enough attention to the part before turning it over to the machine shop to notice that the temp sending unit was in that fitting. I appreciate everyone's help with this. Been a real mother to find the fitting that I need.
This is the byp*** fitting listed at Dearborn. It is NOT correct. It's 5/8" not 3/4". You should also know that the water pump now only comes with a 5/8" ****** so when you find the correct manifold fitting that will be a new issue to deal with. This is my Ranger. Got it off my uncle who got it for a graduation present in the late 70's. It was then parked in a barn in Montana till around 2000 when he gave it to me. I've had it on the back burner since then but now. I went through the rear ended, brake system and all. Going through the trains now and got the engine bay power washed out today and will be painting it tomorrow. Should have it rolling by the end of next month. Thanks for looking
