I have come across a W Engine though to be a 348 but has the dip stick on the p*** side, the block number is 3857655 and was told came out of a 1965 truck, Is it possible to be a 409 because of the dipstick on the p*** side, I thought All 409`s were on p*** side. Heads are 3819333 Have verified the block number several times, any wisdom would be appreciated. thank you, Tom
Casting should be 3857656, not 3857655. It is a 1965 truck 409. There should be reliefs cut into cylinders walls to lower compression. http://www.348-409.com/cgi-bin/block/csvsearch.pl?block=3857656 The heads are 348 that were used on 409 trucks http://www.348-409.com/cgi-bin/heads/csvsearch.pl?head=3819333 The Dipstick on 348 engines is on the driver side rear. 348 and 409 oil pans do interchange so don't rely on this to differentiate between a 348 or 409. The dipstick on 409 engines is located on p***enger side front. Also, you need to familiarise yourself with the rules and do an introduction.
mgtstumpy, thanks for the heads up, just did the introduction, I have been on the 348/409 website a lot over the years and already own several 409`s. I did research for an hour this morning. Always looking for another one. I thought the casting # was wrong also + should be 3857656 but it is 3857655 I looked more than once, I am trying to find out if anyone knows because the dipstick is on the P*** Side and the block # 3857655 and it could be a 409. It is still ***embled. and cannot measure the bore. thanks, Tom
I have 2 409's and 1 348. One 409 is a truck engine, one p***enger engine, dipsticks both on the p***enger side. The 348 is on the driver side. Hope that helps a little. Gary
