When: February 17 - 19 . . . like next weekend! Just to set the story straight - I'm not a 'car show guy' . . . don't really care what people think about what I've built, because I already have the worst critic in the world looking over my work -- that would be ME! Also, I like to build, drive and experience HotRods - the culture, the people, vintage design, traditional parts and style - that is it for me . . . has been in my blood since I can remember. My stuff is old and dirty . . . but it is also loud and obnoxious (a bit like me you might say). So Here Me Out: They are starting up a new indoor car show in Columbus - first year (Summit Racing I guess is a big sponsor). The promoter and I chatted - he said that he really would like some more HotRods in the show - especially vintage and traditional stuff. Anyway, I told him the only reason I'd go is if kids could come and sit in my car (no ropes and setback stuff) - and that my car is NOT a showcar by any means. I said that if one kid got interested in our lifestyle because he/she got a chance to sit in my 32 and 'steer it a bit', or get lifted into the rumbleseat and have a cool experience -- then THAT is why I'd do it. So 'Robb' said yes - that would be no problem. Here is the deal - it costs $50 to bring a car to the 3 day event (starts next Friday - the 17th, setup on Thursday). You get TWO p***es for the show (included) - that pretty much pays your entry fee. I might be the only damn vintage HotRod there - if anybody wants to join me, call Robb and see if he can fit you in. I say line up some of our old HotRods - all in a row, no booth prep, no pipes and ropes and let's get a few kids into them . . . and their parents too as far as I'm concerned. Sometimes just a little and memorable experience is the 'trigger' - it can inspire them up for a lifetime of HotRod creativity and enjoyment and it sure as heck isn't just another 'Computer Game'. Okay - enough of my babble . . . besides, what the Hell else yah gonna do in February in the MidWest! B&S Contact: Rodd Rainey, 330-628-2432 eMail: raineyr@columbushotrodshow.com
I wish I was closer I always let the kids sit in my truck and tell them to build one of their own someday. if any of them are around after the show and I received a trophy I will give that to them. The trophy means more to them than it does to me and maybe this will inspire a future hot rodder! Hobo Jim
WOW, sounds like a fine idea just need a little more time to make arrangements. I would love to participate, Just wish that you where closer. Looking forward to seeing the results.
Will keep yah posted . . . have no clue if there will be interest, just thought I'd throw the last minute idea out there.
"Okay - enough of my babble . . . besides, what the Hell else yah gonna do in February in the Midwest!" Submarine races always came to my mind when I lived in the midwest. I'm ***uming that you mean Columbus, Ohio?
Why not get some Pine Wood Derby Cars from the local Boy Scout Shop and have the kids build a hot rod from the kits? Set up an area for them to do it and only charge for the kits. You can get someone to donate spray paint.
Yes, that is where it is at. On the submarine races . . . tough to do when your periscope is frozen. LOL
HAHAHAAHA...."BAZINGA!" I love Columbus. I lived there for a few years. I worked at the Old Ohio State Pen. until they closed it down and am a graduated Ohio State University Buckeye...Cl*** of 1985! The wife and In-Law's are all from Columbus. Now the Son lives there. Lots of good cars. The Brother In Law collects cars. Has a couple of 55 Chevy's and has worked on more. I miss it but don't miss the winters.
I would do it, but we'll be busy getting ready for Detroit ,which is next weekend. Sent from my SM-G900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Well, it was 35 degrees on Thursday . . . so I drove the 32 to the local outdoor 'spray and wash' - to get the mud off the wheels and engine (from driving it on the muddy roads in January). That was the limit of my 'show prep'. Then I went down to the show at the Convention Center and parked the old girl -- went down yesterday to see how the show was going and see if there were any kids to be seen. I had a blast putting kids in the car - just to see their smiling faces and excitement for somebody actually letting them get in a car. All they heard all day was 'stay behind the blue line' and 'don't touch!'. Here are to some future Hot Rodders . . .
I remember an older cousin taking me for a ride in his new GTO - I must have been about 10 or so. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world - one of those special moments that stuck with me while I built my first hotrod. Sometimes it just takes one little thing - somebody taking the time to show you something you didn't expect, but made a big impression on you . . .
Bored & Stroked, saw your '32 there yesterday, one of the neater cars there. Overall a pretty lame show. Took a friend who was really into cars before life got in the way. He said he enjoyed it, but was also disappointed in the turn out of cars! I had some folks there I knew from the GTO club, they were hoping for more cars also! I guess Columbus is just not an indoor winter car show town. KK
I really liked what you did for the kids at this show...Very cool of you to do this. The photos of the kids say it was a big hit with them. I wish more people did things like this.....Thanks B&S
Yeah - it is the first year, not enough advertising, etc.. It is something that will take a few years to get it going - so we'll just have to see how they do going forward. I'm not a huge car-show dude, but in the middle of Winter, it isn't a bad idea - they just need to put more into it to make it 3 times as large. They have the space and it is a great facility - so time will tell. Thanks for showing up! I may see if we can get a group of real Hotrodders to show up with our types of cars next year -- put a whole row of them in there. Why not
Thank you. I figure if just one kid gets inspired (or gets his parents inspired), that is good for our world. If we don't get more young people involved and p***ionate about our world, there won't be a next generation to take it over. Also, cars are made to be driven and enjoyed - seems a waste to make museum pieces out of them and not at least give the kids a chance to get in them.
I live 35 minutes from there in Lancaster and knew nothing of it. I listen to a couple different Columbus radio stations and heard no mention. Did they have a swap meet of any kind?
RE: Swap . . . Nope - was all indoors . . . had a few vendors . . . probably under 100 cars. Hopefully that advertise the show next year and get more people signed up. Columbus is a pretty cool city - so if they do their job right, they could create a good show over time. The venue is sure nice . . . no question there.
