Hello, Long time listener, first time caller. I'm building a '31 Model A Coupe and am planning on stuffing a '54 331 Hemi with the short bellhousing in it. I'm trying to decide which transmission would be my best bet. I would like to go with a 4 speed and from the research I've done here and Google, I know there are a few places that still make adapters which is great. However with all the info I've read, I haven't found out much about which transmissions are being used. Can anyone point me in the right direction for that kind of info or offer any advice and suggestions? I'm going to be running a 32 ch***is and don't plan on running a wild engine setup, just plan on cruising around town with something mild. I've started to read the Hemi Tech thread on here and so far it's been extremely helpful. Thanks for the help! These early Hemi's are new to me
ZDF,,,While your searching for advice on a ****** to go behind your Hemimyou might slip over to the Introduction forum page and tell us a little about YOURSELF..
Call Bob Walker at Hot Heads in North Carolina. All early hemi parts & info. Then hit the "intro page". Right Bobby??? Mike
To answer your question, Hot Heads and others make an adapter for the plentiful GM 4 & 5 speeds......
While we don't require "introductions," some members do appreciate them so it might be a good idea for you to do one here. Just introduce yourself and let folks know what you are all about. Yeah, and get off my lawn "punk"! LOL, KK
mine got a HOT HEADS Chrysler trans adapter and is backed up with a (518a, 46rh) Automatic over drive
"...hey, what about MOPAR units...?" I was going to say Mopar BUT I was afraid he was going to ask questions about them and I don't know anything about them! Your the Man and he should be contacting you, your a wealth of info. smileyface!
Thanks guys! I've been reading the Hemi Tech section a lot but I wanted to hear what others are currently using. I'm open to Mopars as well. There is a 1970's A-833 on craigslist for $400 I've been pondering or should I stick with say a Toploader or Saginaw? I've also been talking to Bob, hes a great guy and has been helping me out tremendously. I'll be purchasing an adapter from him once I find out what ****** to go with and a bunch of other things in the near future I'm sure. Thanks again guys, I'll be making my way over to introduce myself next.
Those are no good? I read an article where they used one hence why I was considering one. Well that narrows the list down a little lol
Welcome to the H.A.M.B. I am running a 54 DeSoto in a lite roadster. Unless you are hopping up the Chrysler ,it may not even pull itself in 5th gear. I did not want to spend $400 and up for an adapter to use a G.M. automatic (real hot rods have 3 peddels) I Looked around on my own and found that a 60 Dodge v-8 with a 3 speed stick bolted up. This what i am using and happy with it. If you could find an overdive ,it would be even beter.
Saginaw is OK for what it was intended for, low HP/Torque, light foot and 6" of rubber tread. I used a lot of them in AD Chevy P/U that had an original seat, the reverse lever is farther ahead than a Borg Warner or Muncie so you can build a shifter plate forward to clear seat......................
Thanks guys. I stumbled on a complete wide ratio M20 complete with bellhousing, clutch, Hurst Shifter, etc. How would this fair up with the Hemi? Do you think this is a good deal?
Good deal? That depends on what you paid for it. Around here that would be a $1200 package if as described........................................ What the hell is a cable linkage doing on a 4 speed shifter?
