Is a 1947 59 ab flathead a good choice for a engine. Sent from my SM-G928V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
If you want to go fast it's a money hole. If you want good looks and dependability it's a great engine. The hard part is finding one that isn't cracked. Once you have it a normal rebuild will run you close to $3,000.00 with you doing the assembly. That includes all machining, valve work, new pistons, water pumps etc etc. That's about what I have in my 8BA.
Lots of guys will tell you it's a great choice... but as many guys will line up and tell you it's not. Those of us who like flatheads like 'em a lot. 59AB is a great engine for a traditional hot rod.
Thanks guys.i plan on puttin it in a 30 ford coupe highboy.i have 32 rails pinched for model A.and a t-5 v8 halibrand quickchange Sent from my SM-G928V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Send the aluminum bits to Andy at Ipolishit in Columbus Ohio. Won't take much to make it look like this one. They don't make much horsepower but there isn't a hot rodder on the planet that doesn't like them, they might not want to own one but they still like them. Oh by the way they also sound awesome Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Got one sitting in my 40 year old dragster. However you will spend twice the money for 1/2 the performance of a modern engine. New turbo Ford 4 cyl make over 300 hp stock.
A '47 59A flat head is an excellent choice for your Model A coupe. It is shorter than the later 8BA flat head engines and will fit in the engine bay without any firewall modification. The early 59A heads look cleaner with the center water outlet; there is no unsightly draft tube on the early 59A intakes, and the front mount distributor has a nicer appearance than the later side mounted ones.Flat heads are not about horsepower; they are about torque and a built flat head will get you down the highway quickly enough anyway. Add some polish and a bit of chrome and most people at a car show will walk right by the small block chevys just to get a look at your flat head.
NOTHING looks cooler than a dressed out flatty. Looks like you're off to a great start. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Make sure to check for cracks, some can be fixed , others ,not. If its a goodee , make a molassis tank ,50/50 and give her a soak for cuppla months . wash out with high pressure a few times ,dont forget to remove and clean the centre oil passage ! its got a grub screw in front of block in timing area . GOOD LUCK.
