I am still new to all this and learning as I go. I can't seem to find any numbers on this rear end. Does anyone know what this is from the pictures? Taking pictures from your back under a car is not as easy as it would seem.

Looks original and if its not it could be a slightly newer version with better gears.

Okay I finally found some numbers but I have no idea what they mean. So here are a couple more pictures.

How did you figure that out? That would make it original.

you posted a pic of the casting date H248. H is the 8th letter so it stands for the 8th month. 24 is the day of the month and 8 is the last digit of the year

Don't worry about the date. Some 'good time Charlie' went and cleaned and painted it to make you crazy.

1948 was the first year for that style Pontiac rear end. Olds & Pontiac used that from '48 to '52 or '53.

Same rear end as my 46 Olds except mine had trailing arm suspension with coils and not leaf springs.

Hi, I have the exact rear in my Model T coupe hot rod. I have been trying to identify it. I had it narrowed down to pontiac/olds but didnt know the year. my code was K47 so that meant 11/4/47 or 57.( which late month in 47 so probably the 48 or 58 model) That was my issue. I could not find any that had the date code exactly where yours is along with that square raised boss on top of rib above date code( but above top rib), like yours and the filler plug on back, like yours. No other rear had these. Im hoping you see this and can give me insight if in fact it was the original rear in your 48 or was it a 58. 57 turned into a 9.3 rear and can be made into a posi etc. 48 is smaller and also can not be upgraded.. I read all of that and think its true. I hope you can help, this has been the only breakthrough I have found. Thank You in advance.......

  14. From my understanding there are three different Olds/Pont. Up to 1953, 1954-1956, and '57-'64. Posi first avail in 1957

If you are saying that yours looks just like the one in the pictures at the top of this thread, then it had to be a 1948. the 1958 rear end is much larger and completely different. here is an old ad with pictures of a 57-58 Olds rear

Thank you. My date code would be 11/4/47. Since late 47, would this be considered a 48? It does look identical. Does 47 look like this? . My backing plates for brakes are weird too. Has the outer splash lip over the top of plate, not all thexway around. I seen it on 51/52 but csnt find puc of 47/48 backing plate. Thank you

yup, since new cars came out in sept of the previous year then there is no way that a part cast on 11/47 could have ended up on a 47. yours must be a 48. all of this is easier for us if you would post pictures of what you have. posting pictures is super easy, heres a tutorial, and always select "full image" when posting pictures
