Technical Wanted your opinion

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by topher5150, Feb 11, 2017.

  1. I don't know a whole lot about anything but I do
know this is a far better buy at $5500 than your car at $1500.
And you can drive while you play! He already came down from $7000!
They don't really have big #s
(I have nothing to do with this car, just know it can be bought
for that price, or maybe even less)
And you asked for an opinion.
    Good luck with your decision.

You couldn't get to the $5500 car with $4000 and the $1500 rust bucket.

If you got the tools, the resources, a few friends and the H.A.M.B Any car can be built. don't be afraid to try it, and if all else fails surf the h.a.m.b and take notes.
As far as the car in question go for it!!! thats how we learn

A car that needs floors is probably not the best place to start. Although not a difficult job if you have the tools and knowledge it can run into a job way more complex than just floors. Often the metal you will need to attach the floors to will also be rusty or gone. A no no for welding plus will require some fabrication as well.
As others have said if you really want to get into an old car, get the best car you can afford and find to start with. A good intro vehicle for someone new to the hobby are the four doors. They are more reasonable and quite often in better shape, plus they make unusual and KOOL Hot Rods.
Its a great hobby with great people in it but can be a pia if you get in a car that either can't be finished or you can't afford to finish.
    Enjoy the Ride...

Cool! I saw that thing on craigslist. I'm in Holland, where in west Michigan are you? What are your plans for the car?

Good for you man. That's what hot rodding is about, learning to build your car, the way you want it.

I think topher is playing us a little here. Nice blast cabinet and bottles. This isn't your first rodeo.

Anyway, congrats on the new ride. Post more pics. I think it's only 11:00 there in MI. I know you're awake looking at it.

I wish, that's the Craig's list pic. For this project I'll be wallowing in the mud and leaves. So if you want to come over with your portable lifting equipment and point and laugh you guys are more than welcome

"Making it work with what you have" is always more rewarding. Plus, Harbor Freight was created for guys like us.

  17. Yea but he comes from good stock. LOL

MIG welding is about as easy as it gets, once you figure out how to set the wire feed speed you are pretty much there. A lot of us came up with a torch and a buzz box (stick welder). Times have changed I would no begrudge anyone for starting out with e MIG, things are just better these days.

@topher5150 first rule of looking at a project is that you are going to get dirty. You crawl under and over it and see what you are working with. In the pick you posted it appears as though I am seeing the radius rods. One thing that would move the wheels forward like that if the car has not been sub framed is if someone for some unknown reason changed the axle to a spring over set up. Tat car should be spring in front of the axle and changing it to a spring over without moving the cross member would move the axle forward about that much.

That by no means is to say that that is what has been done, just that it is a possibility.

The front suspension is stock, just that it was from a Mercury so I have to slide everything back a couple of inches to the other set of holes in the frame.
