Hey guys, I'm wondering if any of you can help me out here? I'm running a SBC with a 700R4 (3 speed with overdrive) in an old 46 Ford hot rod. I noticed the ****** has a couple of electrical plugs. One is where the speedo cable would go, I'm ***uming the plug there means it has a pulse generator. Can I just take it out and throw a cable with the correct gear in it's place? The other plug from what I've read so far, is that it's for the torque converter lock-up. Will it still shift into overdrive if I don't hook it up? I don't have a computer for it, so I really don't know what to do . Thanks guys.

If you don't lock it up , you will burn it up....google it..I installed a pressure byp*** , to byp*** computer..just drop the pan and its an hour deal..200r4 no problem..700r4. Big problem without computer...

  6. You don't need a computer to lock up a 700 R4 converter. You byp*** the LU circuit lube for no lock up...not a computer.

  7. You don't need to hook up the lockup feature. The lockup is to save mileage and maybe a small amount of heat but unless you are pulling real hard like towing something the heat is minimal. I have been running one in my A for 2 seasons without the lockup and no problem. If it was a problem, then you would have to lock up the torque convertor in 3rd gear as well since most towing requires you to use 3rd gear not overdrive. If I did a lot of freeway driving I would hook it up. The speedo can be changed over to a gear drive but you must remove the tailshaft and remove the reluctor ring ( I think that is what you call it) and replace it with the proper size gear. Then you can put a mechanical speedo drive from an earlier 700R4 on it and you are good to go. I did it in a couple of hours.

Lockup takes like 5 mins by putting a check ball in one place, but having a TV is a must for sure. You can change the speedo gear, but the shaft needs to be drilled and it's very hard.
