I watched this movie for the first time last night. It came out in 1971 when I was in the Army which is why I missed it I guess. It's set in west Texas in 1951-52 so there are lots of old cars and trucks in it. It was made in black and white to make it look more realistic and it was nominated for 8 Academy Awards (winning two) so the critics obviously liked it. Besides Jeff Bridges it stars Timothy Bottoms, Cloris Leachman, Eileen Brennan, John Hillerman and Ellen Burstyn. It's also the first movie ever (according to Wikipedia) of Cybill Shepherd and Randy Quaid. If you don't want to watch the movie for the old cars then how about if there are two scenes with Cybill *******? Anyway I just thought that if any of you guys are looking for an interesting old movie to watch you might want to check out this one....

I may be mistaken but I think I saw that car - the Merc - a couple of weeks ago in Texas. Owner says its the one, and I'd tend to believe him. It's had a haircut and is still "under construction" but it's in good hands...

Excellent show. Very unique when released - B&W was all but forgotten at the time.

Ben Johnson, who was in a lot of John Wayne westerns, was the owner of the picture show and won the academy award for his role.

:) Now I could be wrong about this, and I probably am.IIRC Ben Johnson was in his younger days a member of the"Sons of the pioneers".Was a pretty good vocal artist too.

I've seen this movie a couple of times. Anyone coming from a small town can relate.
I had this Cybill Sheperdish rich girl in high school, she acted spoiled and bored like the movie depicted.
I think she went out with a poor boy like me just to piss her parents off. Surprisedly, our relationship lasted over 2 years or should I say, until her parents had enough of me. After high school, I worked construction and drove around in a Ford pickup having flings with older women. And then, I joined the service. So, I can identify with numerous characters in this movie.

I never knew that Larry McMurtry of Lonesome Dove fame wrote the book.
