I am working on a 1940 chevy 4 door sedan. I could not get the brake drums off on the rear. On the passenger side, I used a very large gear puller to remove the drum. The drum came off but it appears to have bent the plate the the shoes mount to. I think the tongue on the plate under the hub is bent. The shoe on one side sticks out too far and rubs the drum. How do I remove the hub and the bent plate? Does anyone have any suggestions as what to do? I have the stock rear axle and brakes. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Put the words "40 Chevy" in your title.

    Looks like slip on drums.
Did you back the adjustment off on the old shoes a bit before you tried to remove the drums?
Is there a wear ridge all around the inside of the drum edge? That will hook the shoes and prevent the drum from coming off easily if you don't back off the adjustment.

You don't simply muscle the crap outta stuff to get it to do what you want. You will usually create more issues as you just found out! :(
    Hope its an easy fix!!!

There was a huge wear ridge inside the old drum. The wheel cylinder was so rusted that the adjustment couldn't be backed off. [IMG]

Ahhhhh...thats most likely the issue then.
I don't know early Chevs like others here do, so if they give you advice on what to do...listen!

As general info...for the other drum removal I would see if there is a way to release the old shoes with the drum still on. (Maybe there are pins you can cut the heads off and also let the old wheel cylinder loose etc). No idea on the lower setup but there may be a way to finesse your way around that.

Worst case senario I would sacrifice the drums to the cutting torch before damaging the backing plates etc.
Looking at that wear you need replacements anyway!

I have replacement drums. I will be cutting the other side. I just need to figure out how to get the hub off and replace that plate that the shoes are pinned to

Not familiar with the '40 Chev but most backing plates are riveted to the rear axle housing - you will to pull the axle to remove the backing plate

To remove the axle you need to remove rear differential cover spider gear shaft and spacer block. Push axle inward and remove c shaped retainer.

C clips on 40 Chevys? Who woulda thunk it? And I've never seen backing plates riveted on. If a 40 Chevy is its new to me.

I would first try just removing the bolts (maybe four of them) at the end of the axle housing that attach the backing plate (rivets, huh?). Then giving the axle a big tug outward. It may come loose if there is no C clip in there.

Thanks guys. I do have a shop manual for it. I will see if I can pull the axle/hub out.
