Hi guys hoping you can help me I have to replace the drivers side (left) rear axle drive shaft ( half shaft ) on my 48 ford coupe due to a breakage and was wondering if it is possible to do without pulling the axle / torque tube ***embly ? If I have to remove it can I release the rear spring without a spring spreader ?
Sorry for the incorrect terminology as I'm in the UK and we sometimes refer to items differently.
Any advice on doing the job great fully received.
Here is a picture of the ruined shaft ( its been welded to the hub !!![IMG]

Anything is possible with enough time and money. But the axle housing MUST come off the banjo to put the new axle in. And it may need different shims as well. Better to remove it all and completely service with easier access to everything.

Many thanks for your reply, I have a pair of replacement axle shafts and new gaskets seals etc. The axle has been fine until a seal failed and oil leaked out of the brake drum it was then I removed the hub cap and discovered the shaft and hub had been welded together ! ( I haven't had the car long). I believe I have all the parts I need but thought I would seek out some knowledge from you guys on here before I dive in.

Welded hub could be sloppy fit of the taper or busted key or keyway. You'll need a new hub too.

Hi yes no idea why they welded it all together but what you said makes sense, I have a new hub and drum and bearings etc ordered. Thanks for your help and advice

Aren't the spider gears part of the axle on a banjo rear? It will have to be dis***embled to replace the axle.

From memory, the spider case will have to opened up and axle slid out, new one goes in.

    Cozmic,
You can do it without removing the rear end. It can be difficult doing all of it under the car, however.
You'll need to do the following:
    1. Grind or cut off the welded area on the axle/hub.
    2. Jack up the car and support it on the frame
    3. Remove the tires and hubs from both sides
    4. Remove the spring from the axle housings, disconnect the brake line, etc.
    5. Remove the left side housing, the axles and ring gear/differential will come out the left side.
    6. Remove the 8 ring gear bolts and open up the differential.
    7. Install the new axle(s)
    8. Install the ***embly in reverse of the above. Be sure to use the same thickness gasket on the LH axle housing to banjo. Put a small bead of sealant around the housing register lip.

    Good luck.
