I am trying to get some flat pieces of aluminum cut by a local shop on their waterjet machine. The pieces are drawn to scale in Adobe Illustrator as an EPS file (vector file...line art). The shop needs a DXF or DWG file. I've tried exporting it from Illustrator (version 9), but they aren't able to read the files. Does anyone have any hints for creating a DXF or DWG file from an EPS file? Does anyone know CAD who would be able to make the DXF or DWG file for me from my vector graphic?
    Thanks for the help.

If you send me the file, I'll see what I can do to translate to DXF for you.

I would not use the EPS version of your file in this process. I would start again, open the original AI (illustrator format) version of your file. Then Export command, and select dxf format to make the file that the shop wants.

I believe EPS converts your vector info into raster/bitmap. That's probably why it didn't work.

Design we can all do with our eyes closed, it's the ability to move this data around a**** different formats that is now the challenge.

    Good luck.

the DXF format isnt a bit map/raster data file... this would imply it is an actual image file once converted, DXF uses ASCII to define an object in 3D space.

troubleshooting file converting problems generally follow a common guideline

    1) were ANY errors generated while converting?
    2) what is the file size of the DXF created?
    3) are you able to open the DXF and view your work w/o any errors? (directly related to #1/#2)
    4) what are the default options in the conversion dialogue box?
    5) have you tried to save from a different machine

can you talk with a tech person at the shop where they will cutting your piece? perhaps they can convert the EPS for you.

If you still haven't been able to get it converted, pm me. I should be able to either import and over draw it, or just redraw it completely. I have AutoCAD 2006 so I can save it to either .dwg or .dxf

Thanks for all of the advice and help on this one. I went back to the original AI file on Mike's suggestion and was able to produce a file the shop could use. Thanks again - I appreciate all of the help!
