What is it for? Sorry for the newbie question, but I can't seem to find anything about its function in any of the service manuals that I have for my car. I have a 1954 Ford Customline with the 223 I-6. It seems like all this tube does is create a smoke screen whenever I'm accelerating... Is this a bad sign? It doesn't put out as much smoke when at idle, or when cruising along. Thanks for all your insight! Fred
Cool. Thanks guys! Now, is it normal for smoke to come out of this tube? It's not a lot, except for when I accelerate. I saw a filter kit somewhere--could the smoke be from oil ac***ulation in the filter or tube? Should I worry, or is this a normal thing for these older cars? Fred
i don't know if you can call it "normal"...but if the engine is a lttle tired ,,,yes , it will smoke out of it is the motor hard on oil? how many miles on a quart? could you do a compression check ? i'd say if you can get 500--1000 mles to a quart , it runs good , doesn't make any strange sounds...it's ok and just run it
You can plug the tube, tap a fitting into the top piece of the tube and connect a hose. Connect this hose to a PCV valve then another piece of hose to your motors intake manifold. This will get rid of a lot of fumes and oil drippin' on the driveway. If your rings are bad this ain't gonna fix it...PCV valves have different ratings so if your running a dizzy with vacuum advance you might have to play around till the advance lines up with original specs. Start with a PCV valve from a modern engine with close to the same displacement. To really do it right, run a non vented oil cap and run a hose from the valve cover to the underside of the air cleaner. This is a closed breathing system. Clutters up but keeps the engine space a whole lot cleaner.
