Art & Inspiration Just Louvers////////

Love this hood, I've been 'doodling' on my 40 hood, and really like the idea of this. they're all different angles though, to try and use the flattest part of the hood, and therefore get more louvers in. How difficult would this be to punch, what do you think? What size louvers are the ones in the pics?

 

The louvers I used in Jeem's truck are my 2 1/2" die. I tell you what, it's kinda hard to tell you how to make this work on a public forum. My layouts are what make my work unique, and why I have people from all over the world sending their stuff into my humble shop to have their louvering done. So you might imagine I'm a little bit protective of the hows and whys of what I do. I don't mean to sound overly self important, but I have a 25 year investment in my business.

the gap in these louvers is for the brace for the hood release handle but i like the pattern it forms.

 

33...a Hotrod without louvers is like a Day without Sunshine. Sometimes a purpose built arrangement can be easy on the eyes too.

 

I'm looking for someone that can punch louvers like the ones in the picture

 

Zorro there are several accomplished louver-smiths around here who will be able to assist you.

While I can't quote an average price, my current price is 2.25 per louver. I don't charge a set up fee. either.

Chip (need louvers?) is an artist! He louvered my decklid, see avatar. He also louvered my hood tops. True craftsman.

 

I guess Eric Vaughn gave me a hell of a deal. I didn't realize $1.50 per punch was such a good price!

Some that look old (but aren't)

 

Its interesting to see all the individual styles of louvers. If your using dies you created that bumps up the uniqueness even more.
Then there's layout, angles & spacing. Great stuff 1929.​

 

Question to the Louver Artists. Do any of you use historic dies found by chance or otherwise? If so this would be a great place to tell the story...

Eric Vaughn's dies are historic in a round about way. When he first built his press, from an old rivet press, he borrowed the hood from Paul Hornung's '32 roadster, the one that later became Baskerville's '32. Those louvers were punched by Art Ingles on Frank Kurtis' press. Eric machined his dies to be an exact match. Since the louvers on my first RPU came out of the Kurtis press, again punched by Art Ingles, I had to have Eric punch the louvers on my current RPU.

When Arlen Kurtis took over his dad's shop he cleaned out a bunch of stuff to make room for his boat building business. Jack Lufkin hauled the press down to Ak Miller's shop. It sat in the back with stuff piled on it for about 30 years. About 8 years ago I asked Jack about it, and he said he had a junk man haul it off with a bunch of other stuff. He would have given it to me had I thought about it sooner. Art Ingles has been gone for some time.

Dean you've met some cool people in your travels. The Kurtis's, AK Millar...didn't he have the Deuce with the knee action at the dry lakes.

I remember reading a bit on the Kurtis story. Sorry about Art...

To bad about the press. As time passes things meander through changes in direction based on so many things and sometimes more than not the dumpster is favored. Who knows maybe the recycler didn't junk it...that's quite possible.

Yes, Ak built a '32 roadster with a knee action front end prior to WWII. Ak was never one to follow the crowd.
