Technical Gassers of the mid 60's

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Todd's Rod's, Mar 13, 2017.

  1. Here's a Watson paint job just for comparison. Charles Kuhl's 1957 Ford Ranchero.

The panel thing looks a little "busy" for my taste, and not very g***er like.

Sondre Kvipt's 1957 Ford Ranchero ...You wouldn't have to go so crazy though!
    Just some ideas.

How about if you take something like this, and elaborate on it?

Do a lower panel like this and fish-scale it, then do a panel above the trim along the beltline and do an endless line on it, put a thunderbolt bubble on the hood, do another endless line panel on the flat spot on top of the hood bubble, then do two panels on the hood with more fish scales, split down the center of the hood and going around the base of the t-bolt bubble. Select your colours with thought and care and it will look fantastic. If you are doing the base colour in white like you suggested, you can do almost any group of colours on the panels, but I would think hard about the combination of colours within the panels. Keep in mind that even if the base colour is white, the panels are going to be the dominant colour that the eye will see when its all done. You could go with a combination of yellows, oranges and gold, or greens, golds and blues, or blues silver and purples, just throwing ideas at you and suggesting what I would do, with white as a base, you can use anything you want as panels.

This without the Flame effect would look reallllllly good and is something a home painter could pull off decently IMO.

Those '57 Rancheros have great lines and make very cool rides. Do it up your way, and enjoy the hell outta it.
FWIW, I'm not a fan of 'lettered' street driven cars myself, but if it floats yer boat have at it. Your approval is the only one that matters. Someone mentioned the Caddy Firemist paints. Did an ElCamino of mine years ago in a Caddy(Mocha?)Firemist and it was a looker!

I have not posted pictures of my 40 chevy build here on the HAMB, cause it is built the way I want it. Not the way someone thinks I should build my car. I could call it a g***er, but it won't fit the 65 rules or any others. So for the sake of labeling, I will call it a street freak, after all, I am a street freak. Or maybe, I'll just keep calling it my 40. Disc brakes, blown SBC, 12 point cage, not traditional, but much safer. I consider my SBC vintage and traditional (that's just me I know). I grew up in the 60's with my fathers flatheads, but we all raced with SBC's, unless we could afford a 440 car. We were not concerned with tradition, cause frankly, tradition was kinda slow. I will paint it the way I want, I won't win any shows, but I will have a blast strip or street. When the day is done, I'll park it by the ol 29 roadster pickup and they can discuss tradition between them, the 59 Vette, and 36 pickup and the firewood haulin Willys. Seems tradition sets in my garage, the others get driven - hard.

My bud in school bought a new 57' in black - lowered - pipes - bar grille - and dodge lancer caps and it was a looker for sure, and one hell of a cool skirt chaser when you are going to school

Those 57's make a lot better looking custom than a g***er looking car, as the body lines just work

  8. I like this! Kinda more custom, but cool.....and I'm sure very expensive! I also vote for the white headers.Yeah I know, impossible to keep clean, but they look so 60's! A common description of well built cars then was "sanitary? Think THAT one over guys?

I'm done suggesting, somebody will flame me and say I'm telling you what to do.I think you understand where I'm coming from.Looking forward to reading more of your ideas!

    badvolvo,

I for one, would love to see some photos of your '40. If you don't want to post you could send me a photo of your '40 via PM. It sounds like a pretty interesting car.

I've been trying to find this article since this thread started. Gotta be clear, theres quite a few here that I wouldn't put on my car on a bet, and the how-to descriptions might be over-simplified, but its a good broad overview of a whole bunch of different techniques that were popular in the late sixties-early seventies. Theres still lots of good info in here, just don't glue magazine photos on your car, or start searching ebay for NOS Cal Custom mural decals.:D

IMG_0928.JPG This is a picture that appeared in the local newspaper of our 36 Ford G***er that was built in the mid sixties when we were teenagers in my Grandpa's garage with our nickels and dimes and lots of junkyard parts. Originally flathead powered and later a 327 SBC. Nothing fancy but we sure had fun racing it. I'm the skinny guy in the middle.

  25. Thank you! The OP is sincere, knowledgeable and very COOL! His Ranchero will turn out great, he has more skills than I do!

  26. Me? I go for clean body work and nice simple paint. A Ranchero is busy enough without every trick paint thrown at it. You cant go wrong with Black, White, or Red.

Just take note of the date...1976. This stuff was getting done a few years earlier, but be wary of stepping beyond the time you're trying to emulate.
