I recently had my transmission completely rebuilt with all new gears. I read an older post but wonder what I need to fix? Any suggestions? It pops out unless I manually keep it held there. Is there a kit II need or a new shifter? Is this easy to fix without pulling the ******? Suggested source for the parts? Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Ok you said new gears so I'm going to say the little teeth on A isn't your issue. Now look at D, the slider. The internal teeth on D could be worn to a point and that can cause what you are experiencing.
did it pop out of gear before the rebuild? The usual cause is the edges of the little teeth on A being worn, and especially, the sides of the grooves inside D being worn.
A couple of things come to mind... It's usually the gears that have been mentioned above (back in the day, the shop where I worked had a machinist who would undercut (grind a reverse taper) on both the inner and the outer corresponding gears .. Secondly.. Have the detent balls and springs been fitted?? Maybe a spring is broken, or needs a heavier tension..
What transmission? Shift tower or linkage? Column or floor shift? Heavy shifter? Does it do it all the time, or only on deceleration like when going down hill? Do you use second gear to slow you down?
It did pop out before rebuild. Floor shifter. ****** from 49 F1. It seems to do it when there is more pressure on 2nd. It isn't all the time, but most of the time. Down hill especially. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app

Common with these F1 transmissions. Like the above have mentioned, it could be one or all of the issues. Cheap quality br*** synchros can also be a cause of the problem. I'd give Mac Van Pelt a call. He's a Ford 3 speed trans. guru and will sell you quality parts to fix this. The combination of worn or cheap parts, heavy car, gear ratio, rear ratio puts a lot of stress on 2nd gear. If everything isn't up to snuff, it will pop out.
Too much clearance at the ends of the ***embly to the case. Reshim the ***embly properly. If you are going to do it yourself, get the book from VanPelt showing how to do it properly. It's well worth it.
True. I forgot to include this important aspect of the rebuild. This is something you should be able to check right now without taking the trans out. To confirm, was this trans rebuilt and is still giving you the issue or it in the truck giving you the problem?
i have found you need to measure every new part you buy. the junk varies and as what was stated play between the input and out put shaft will wreak havoc, popping out of gear or hard shifts.
Hi What keeps the slider from jumping out of mesh is the three dogs and spring on the slider and there mating gears if the gears, shafts and sycro rings are not worn . You can take the shifter and put the slider in gear and drive it and it will not jump out. The detent and balls in the shifter do not keep the transmission in gear. Take the transmission back to who ever repaired it (IT WAS NOT REBUILT) and have it rebuilt Regards Dave
I had a Muncie 4 speed in an OT car that would pop out of 2nd gear on deceleration unless I accelerated slightly after shifting into that gear before decelerating. It was pretty tricky on hard down shifts/fast braking conditions. I'd have to stab the throttle as I released the clutch, then release the throttle and jump on the brakes real fast. Made for exciting times...
