It seems to be automotive, I found it in a box of old parts that I bought. There is lead shot in that waxy looking stuff. Do you have any idea what the numbers would stand for if it was for coolant?
The part you have fits into a larger bulb, you draw acid into the bulb till the center part floats, then read the specific gravity at the acid level.
No, the box doesn't have anything on it and there isn't anything on the paper inside the gl*** either, other than the numbers.
Yes, it's the float/level to read specific gravity of battery electrolyte. Looks to be a replacement part to replace a broken one; they break fairly easily if the "syringe" is dropped. I need a new bulb for mine, the rubber deteriorates, gets hard and cracks. Course there's a similar one to read the density/temp level of your anti-freeze. Sort of like a turkey baster. Can you still buy those older style big ones somewhere? I've looked and can only find the small cheap ones with the multiple balls that float or the little hinged float Need the battery one as I really don't need the anti-freeze specific gravity for Florida
what the point in testing them these days? you cant rebuild one cell like you could once and youll know if its flat
The problem is most batteries are sealed these days. Not much call for them. Gravity testing is probably the way to test for state of charge and battery health. Let 'em cook till all the cells equalize.
I bought one a few months back at a Sears store that was closing. I paid about $3 for it. I use it to sort out used batteries. I use the batteries for a cheap redneck solar system. Experts say they won't work, but I have free lights and other 12 volt stuff running just fine.
Thank you for all of your replies to my question. Now I can throw it in the garbage because I know it isn't anything important.
Now that Jim has solved the mystery of the unknown object I feel it is only right to hazard my original thought, a plain packaged pre war do it yourself home colonoscopy kit. HRP
Heck, put it up for sale, someone (maybe upspirate) will want it. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
