Talking to a guy who owns a junk yard near here.

He's got a 350 Chevy he pulled out of a wreck, said it was running when he pulled it (been stored inside) and it sounded like it had a mild cam.

Chrome valve covers and air cleaner -- looks like what you'd see in a '70's pickup, etc.

    Said he'd take $500.

I've got a '49 Willys Overland with an early Buick V-6 that might appreciate more cubes:D

Think it would be worth the risk?

make him start it up on the floor or where ever its at, just to make sure it aint knocking for that kinda moo-laa....its possible it would be worth the $500 -check the numbers to see if its a 4 bolt main jobber those are always a good find...of course rebuild kits is cheap enough but if its already broken wtf...

thats way more than I'd pay for an engine of unknown origin and condition, can he start it up for you at least so you can hear if its got any knocks or other unusual noises?

can't you find any rust buckets in your local cl***ifieds for a lot less than that?, you buy the whole vehicle you get a transmission and anyhting else you'd ever need

That's way more then I would pay for motor I can't even hear run, for that much tell him you need to hear it run. if burns oil no biggie, like gunny said rebuild kits are cheap, but if the last 4 numbers on the back of block are 0010 I believe that would be 4 bolt block then unless it's cracked it's starting to get in the ball park.....still more then I would pay. My last motor was bought like upchuck said, bought the whole truck for $380.00 because the owner said he thought the ****** was blown up....Clutch yes ****** no sold off a few parts and kept motor and it didn't cost me a cent....

Usually a professional junk yard will offer a waranty. No-knock, no-smoke etc. most of the time it's for a replacement and not a refund.

No way!! You should be able to get a SBC for almost free. I've already gotten two for free, one was a low-mile rebuilt with the best engine stand I have now. I'm working on getting another running SBC with bell, flywheel, clutch and ****** for $150.

Keep your eyes and ears out, talk to people. The real deals come from non-car people, usually.

oh ya i tottaly agree look for a donor car if possible lots a goodies in a donor, unless the 350 your looking at is one of those new fangeld complete LT1 jobbers still make him start it..

  9. even if it is a stellar 4 bolt main 350 in great shape...you are getting the fuzzy end of the lollypop at a 5 spot.

Can you tell us what numbers to look for? I wasn`t aware that you could tell by the numbers if its a 4 bolt or not. The 010 block isn`t gonna tell you.

  11. Around here a early 70's Small block Chevy would be worth $500 in pieces and the buyers being stock car drivers. Otherwise hell no that thing is not worth that. Hell you can pick up the newer 350 for around $250 then just swap the intake to go back to a carb.

The numbers on the drivers side rear on my early 4bolt truck block are 3970010. I don't know if all were 4bolt with this number but It sure gives you a good chance.

  15. About 18 months ago I got a running, driving, 57,000 mile Suburban with a 350 and 700R4 for $500. I'm still driving it, and I've never had to mess with the motor at all except for a couple things I messed up out of my own stupidity.

Of course with gas prices what they are I can barely afford to leave the driveway, but still -

Those # will come up as I believe a 67 327 H.O. also, the difference with out taking the pan off would be a small Harmonic balancer on the 327
