Technical Steering Wheel Installation Help on 1950 Chevy Styleline

    I have a stock steering wheel column in my 1950 chevy styleline and I'm trying to install an original 1959 Impala steering wheel. I can get the splines lined up and the steering wheel starts to go on but it stops about half way. The spline shaft at the end of the steering column is about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up through the center of the steering wheel.

    I put the nut on and tightened it thinking it would push the steering wheel the rest of the way down but that didn't work. How much pressure or force is okay without doing damage to the splines. Again, everything is lined up and it starts easy...just don't know how far to keep going with it. I assume the top of the spline shaft on the column should be flush with the top end of the spline in the center of the steering wheel? If that makes sense? I have the same issue if I try to put the original steering wheel back on so my thinking is that it takes some force to get it to go all the way on?

    Look at the splines on the shaft closely, is there any damage? If the stock wheel will not go back on relatively easily, something is damaged.

    Splines on the shaft and steerimg wheel are both in great shape...no obvious damage. Wheel slides on smooth for the first half and then stops. I can put the nut and washer on but I think both splines should have full contact.

    Hi
    Take a venier and measure the top and the bottom of the shaft and the wheel and you will know how far the wheel will go on the shaft.
