We've got seven camel hump heads . Its been a while since I worked on small block Chevy engines. Could someone give me an Idea what a complete head with valves would be worth . Thanks in advance . Purdy .

Mostly depends on numbers and if they're 2.02. Best bet is to list them and wait for a restorer to need that head.
For a performance engine build, the aftermarket heads are so good and the cost of machining is so high they don't make sense anymore.
The market has narrowed to guys that want a period correct head or restos.

Not as much as they used to be. Due to the aftermarket and the off topic LS, Gen 1 stuff like Camel Humps are now mainly just restorer fodder.

If they have a big X after the casting number, they're worth a little to restorers. Past that, not that much. Too many to choose from.

  5. I've seen fresh ready to go sets for $250, the allure just isn't there anymore.

They are not king of the hill for performance builds anymore (haven't been for a while). As the right numbered head with the right date code, they'll bring a pretty good price to a restorer - but only to the right person.

That "X" is only on the underside, only visible with the intake off. And only 3 years. 61-63 100_1101.jpg

    Correct...and...
I've also seen them with the X right next to the number.

    All true^^^^^^^
It's the guy that has a big $$$ 60's Corvette (pick a year) restoration going that will pay good money especially if he can't find head cast dates within a couple months prior to the cars mfg. date.
This makes a difference, just having the right casting numbers isn't good enough for that crowd.

  11. At the last swap meet a guy was selling a pair of double humps for $500. He'd installed screw-in studs, guide plates and hardened seats. They didn't sell.

The best thing would be to list them on EBAY with photos of all the casting marks for restorers. I seen guys pay over $500 for the correct Corvette marked heads.

I sold a set of 1.94's 2 years a go at Turlock for $200, they were the correct casting and date code needed for a guy doing a 69 Z28. He planned to recut them to 2.02's......I just got lucky that he stumbled across and needed them.

I just bought a 327 with a decent pair of 461s with 1.94s for $150. I thought it was a deal. I've seen camel humps advertised anywhere from $75-$500 for a pair in the last few years, both here in MT and in the Bay Area Ca. There was a local set of '67 491s with 2.02s on CL for $300 for a couple months recently. Aftermarket aluminum heads, vortec heads, LS motors, and cheap crate motors have taken their toll. I know guys who've recycled decent heads because they were tired of stepping over them. It brings a tear to my eye....

Just picked up a USED set for 60 bucks, hay he said 60bucks not me. The good thing is that they were loaded with ARP studs, comp guide plates, manley 2.055/1.60's and one season ( off a drag car dual CROWER 68100X209 springs ). So to freshen them it only ( and update a little ) took a disassembly, clean , crack check, cut -n- install bronze guides, new seals, check and set spring heights with new shims, do the valves and seats, assemble and ... and-and ... ya, there they set with no home, but some well deserving young ( no money ) car guy will get them , on the cheap.
I'll probably ( as i usually do ) trade them for some shop help, labor. Because there not as popular, as they once were--- 200.00 would walk em OTD.

2 yrs ago I bought a set of 461 and a set of 462 fresh out of the machine shop the 196 valve heads were 275 but I got him down to 250 then my brother bought the 202 valve heads for 300 which he wanted 325 for them, the big valve camaro/vette heads bring about 450 I believe the number is a 291 head casting number but cost differs from state to state, lol hope that helps I think BC there's so many diff good hp heads out there now it's brought the cost of the camel hump heads down, jmo

Purdy, we hung on to them too long. I remember when they were gold, we had to run a "stock" head. The rules have changed, and all the above is true. Been missing you over on the Fordbarn. Good Luck
