Hi All, I recently purchased a running 21-stud flathead on ebay as a base for my mild traditional build (I've got a whole mess up fun parts I'm going to thrown at it). The gentleman I purchased it from though is in Florida and I'm in Colorado, so shipping it freight is a must. We're running into a little head wind though and I wanted to see if anyone has any recommendations for good freight arrangements? We've already decided to remove the radiator and the shift lever to make it more manageable in the crate...any other thoughts? Thanks.
Strap it on a wood pallet take it to Fastenal let them ship it, they can even shrink wrap it for you, use them all the time never no problems and a great price
Check freight quote.com , I shipped a motor and trans to New Jersey from Texas and they got a pretty good rate for me. It helps if there is a dock or fork lift at both ends... Lowers the price quote a bit. Sent from my Moto G Play using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I just used fastenall on shipping a complete windshield frame for a 64 Malibu convertible.Shipper did a great job putting it on a large pallet and wrapping with cardboard. When I went to pick it up at the local store the pallet was deystroyed and holes punched through the cardboard.Luckily It wasn't bent to bad and the areas I needed to be used to replace what I have will work.Asked the guy what the deal was and mentioned these kind of shippments aren't their main concern.I guess that meant to bad.Moral of the story make sure the shipper does everything he can plus to make sure the packaging is bullet proof or who knows what you will have when you go to pick it up.
Used these guys a few times, never had a problem. http://www.engineshipping.com/ Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Shrink wrap it, make sure its sealed up and fill that crate with expanding foam. It will arrive intact. Digging it out is less fun, but who cares? its not jacked up. One of the guys on my Porsche board ships transaxles like this and they always show up in good shape.
make a trip down there to some car event and get it your self that's what we always do. You get your stuff and see a car show you would normally not get to. Good luck what ever you do.
We install reman engines frequently at the shop. Lately, they have been shipped in a heavy duty poly shipping container (looks like a Big Mac container from MacDo, only way bigger and sturdier). The core is returned to the rebuilder in the same container. Maybe your shipper could obtain something similar. They are reusable, so no charge for the "crate". Perhaps a freight company specialized in shipping engines would provide the clam shell case. Since they completely enclose the engine, there's no risk of damage or lost (or purloined) parts.
ROAD TRIP!!!!!!!!! A friend and I went from San Diego to Lima Ohio and drove back a 52 Packard. Great trip. Long and slow, but great.
Thanks for all the responses guys, I'll pass them along to the seller for him to chase down. A road trip would by far be the best way to get this engine, but that's just not in cards for me right now. My plans are to build it up a bit with OEM polished aluminum heads, an eddie meyer dual intake with 97's, a hot cam, and maybe a HC magneto or lincoln v12 distributor...still debating. When all is said and done I'm putting it in a jalopy 36 humpback tudor so I can run the Hot Rod Hillclimb, hoping to have things ready for summer 2018. My grandpa has a prestine restored 36 21-stud, so I've always had a thing for the early flatheads. Not a lot of power, but history and beauty to spare.
