mamllc, just looking at that finger joint cutter makes me want to count my fingers. That thing looks evil.
I've seen some incredibly realistic wood graining, if you found someone who was really good at it you could probably make a lot of people believe it was wood.
My first thought when I hit the power button for the first time was something like....Holy Sh.....I'm not getting my fingers anywhere near that!! I built a self feeding attachment for the shaper that holds the wood and keeps my fingers at a comfortable distance from the cutters.
Fantastic. Your work reminds me of a local car builder I'm sure you have heard of, Hercules Motors in Tampa, FL. Gary
These.... And a few more. Here's another build thread from a while back. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/48-merc-woodie.963014/
Yes, is the short answer. The longer one is that it is almost never a matter of whether something can or can't be done, as much as a matter of what it's going to take to do it.
That's an awesome answer I developed mainframes at IBM years ago I understand Sent from my HTC6535LVW using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Wow, what great woodwork. Do you have any photos of your setup for the finger joints? Where did you get the cutter made?
Thanks. The cutters were custom made and it was quite a while ago, I think the company was Nordic Tool, and in California. All from memory though, I don't have any pictures of the attachment and it's not set up at the moment.
I dropped the ball. I normally try to keep a complete photographic record, but. About halfway through building the doors the owner stopped in and took pictures while he was here. Since he already had some, I didn't take any. I have a few, but not much. The car is apart at the moment, the chassis is back at the builders being finished and I am sanding the wood parts so they can be sprayed. Plan is to reassemble it probably early June, will have more pictures then. This is it for now.
I'm sorry I didn't check this out earlier, to be honest I thought it was going to be another 2x4 and plywood build with sheetrock screws, you Sir have some woodworking skills. Bob
Wow!!!!! I'm a self employed finish carpenter by trade and I've alway in the back of my head wanted to build a woodie. My pops has a 28-9 pickup cowl that would be a perfect starting point. I dont own a shaper since my work doesnt require one but that would be a small investment plus I could write it off to uncle sam. VERY NICE JOB INDEED!!!
Sounds like a pretty good plan! Finger joints can be done on a table saw too, and just have to have one cutter made. The joints are 1-1/8" depth and 3/8" on center. Have to be very accurate when you move the fence, but that's not too tough to work out.
Yes I could use my table saw, a shaper would be nice though. I dont want to hijack your thread but this is the weird stuff I do.
Haha! I do a lot of circuit modifications and customizations on vacuum tube type guitar amplifiers. People sometimes will ask me if this or that are possible. I tell them anything is possible, it's all a matter of cost. How much did you want to spend? LOL!
Hello, I have always like the Model A Woody. But, the thing is unable to lock the doors or roll up the non existent windows. Will you be putting on any windows everywhere? Sure, it takes away from the stock look of the Model A Woody, but as long as you are custom making the wood section, are those in the future plans? I have seen custom two door Model A woodies, but a 4 door model with windows everywhere would be functional. Is it a possibility? Jnaki
There is or was an organization located in PA that builds the same body in a kit form. They even had a system to have roll up windows. The price was not that out of line. But I could imagine the required work involve even if all the wood is cut, shape, and jointed.
Holy Cow,how did I miss this thread? I "wood" be remiss if I didn't commend you on the fantastic work,I will be following this one from here on out! HRP
